Hi everyone,
I am about to change all of the gear oil on my 98 Frontier. I went to Napa and they are trying to sell me the Royal purple GL-4 and GL-5 combo gear oil for my M/T. Can I use this oil, since I am not suppose to run the GL-5? Confused

if it is pure synth, you'll be OK.

I wouldn't. stick with something that's a true GL4.

The napa stores here carry a store brand in 2 qt jugs...dino GL4

That, or you can go to your local Dodge dealer and ask for 6 quarts of the NV4500 Castrol GL4...that's a full synthetic true GL4...but it's expensive.

redline mt90 is GL5, and everyone i know that uses it in a nissan trans loves it. synth can get a GL5 rating without all the corrosive additives needed for a dino oil. also, the only napa GL4 i could find was 85w90, which shifts like ass in the cold.

Heh...cold isn't a big issue here.

I run the synthetic Castrol in mine anyways.

Possibly you were also talking about multirated syntheticcs, that some folks worry about. I think there are some synthetics you should worry about using, but others that have gl-4, gl-5 rating( and a few other ratings) and they do very well.

I ran Amsoil synth up to about 200K miles( not implying the lube was that old- it was changed a few times in the duration)_ w/ no problems.

I heard so much about the Redline MT-90 that I had to try it and compare. It shifts better.
