I spent the better part of the day along with an ex employee who is a very good fabricator cutting the bed on this 2003 Frontier. The goal is to reduce rear overhang by 10", while keeping the complete w/o flare and full tailgate functionality. I also wanted to keep the frame intact in the event a future owner would want to put an original bed on it. There is a lot of cleaning and trimming left to do, especially in light of the fact this bed has a spray in liner which is thick and hard to remove.
I don't know why the pictures are in reverse order here, chalk it up to my lack of skill! Covina Crash 1989 FJ62, 5.3, 80 axles spring over, 10 yrs of busted knuckles. 1976 CJ5 350TPI T18 D44's 2003 Frontier project |

Here is are the latest pictures after another day and a half of work. The outer skins are ready for finish body work, the inner structure is welded but still needs some grinding.

Very nice work. I appreciate you posting the pictures. I have a double bob to do for a friend and your pictures are helpful. I like the way you used the drop material for backing strips.

Thanks Reserector. The backing we call "fish plates" in the auto body world really add a lot of strength. We plug weld them about an inch back of the seam. They also serve as a heat sink for the butt weld minimizing warpage. You still have to be patient, it took two guys over an hour to weld and grind the outer welds, one small spot at a time.

Hey.. its a "4RD"!
Looks great! I'm going to be bobbing a friend's truck eventually. Those fish plates look like a great idea. I'll be using that for sure. |

If anyone is interested, here are a couple of videos of the process I put on You tube. In the end I was dreaming about keeping the frame intact, If I don't want it to hang out beyond the rear sill I will have to lop off about 4-1/2".
This shows the cutting apart of the outer and the inner structure and floor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9k6peGYygc This shows a lot of the trimming and fitting to end up with a finished product. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn1LqBbzypw Covina Crash 1989 FJ62, 5.3, 80 axles spring over, 10 yrs of busted knuckles. 1976 CJ5 350TPI T18 D44's 2003 Frontier project |
