I have been wondering since I got the truck, what the complications of swapping in the navarra TDI engine would be. Working with imports, I have found that it's not too hard to find a totalled car in another country and ship it over, or at least not with hondas and some nissans. Has anyone done any serious research into the possibility of putting the TDI engine into their truck? Is it a good engine? I would imagine one of the most prevelant advantages would be tons of torque, especially with some minor upgrades. I just wonder how hard it would be and what in the truck would have to be changed.

Look up Win's profile. He's in Holland and has a 2.5 TDI in his truck. As I understand it, it's an awesome engine with lots of low end torque. I want one BAD but have to deal with Phoenix metro smog laws, so I could never make it a reality as long as I live here.

The 2.7L Diesel TDIs are great engines.. They have lots of torque (more than the VG30 i think), are great on fuel (26-27mpg), and will bolt right into your truck. Plus they have less electrical parts.. no ignition system, and so there is less to go wrong. Being a diesel they will probably run forever too.
You would definitely need the engine control system (if it has one), and would need the motor mounts, accessory brackets, etc. I think probably the ONLY reason we didnt get them here was because Nissan probably felt noone would buy them, as us Americans want our "luxury" SUVs and trucks, etc. The TDI diesels are very noisy engines.. sound like a mack truck or something. --------------------------- |

Isn't it a 2.5? Also, do they use a different transmission? I know 4 banger and V6 models use a different tranny, and the diesel has more torque than either one of them.

no, 2.5 was the 4cyl i think.. and the 2.7 was the 6?
here are specs on the newest engines in the Patrols: web page The 4.8L I6 makes 248hp and 309ftlb of torque. Thats a monster. Im tryin to find some more specs on the 2.7.. it seems to be the one everyone wants over there. --------------------------- |

quote: Man, I've been thinking the same thing about a deisal. They would be superior offroad than a petrol engine, you don't have to worry about grades of fuel, and if you were to travel abroad, deisal is far more abundant than gas just about anywhere. What I think would make most sense it to contact the Nissan dealer and see if they can get one as a crate motor. You would need to change your hood to one with a scoop or cowel (sp?) to suck air, plus change out your air flow too since a diesal without the inner cooler is pretty much worthless. I know my Safari snorkel came with directions for the 2.5 deisal. MVM ###################### www.wheelohio.com mark@wheelohio.com |

The diesel in the pick ups here is the 2.5 turbo. The newest version pumps out 133hp !! The 2.7 is the Terrano and Terrano II engine with only 125hp.
If you really want to do the swap why not start with the 3.0TDI out of a Patrol ? 158hp and 354NM torque. It's not too difficult, they're even available in the Terrano II since a few months. Considering the Terrano II still has the complete frame and suspension the first gen. Pathy was build on............. Smog checks shouldn't be a problem, they're pretty high standard to be legal here too. To seriously consider this project you would need some eyes and ears in the area of question.
You would be looking to purchase a totaled truck that either was rear-ended or hit from the side, something where the driveline would be intact, but more body damage was done than insurance would be willing to repair - hence a 'total'. If you could purchase the entire wreck whole and pay a carrier to ship it to you intact, that would give you everything you need. Perhaps you could pursue shipping scrap from Europe or some other topic along that line. I'd refrain from calling it by it's name - inferring it as 'scrap' may lessen some of the $$$ needed for shipping. That would provide you with engine, transmission, transfer case (if a 4x4) and electronics. As a benefit you would also get mounts, linkages and some driveline components as well. Could be a fun project... |

that was more along the lines of what I was thinking. Did they offer any of these trucks in japan, or only europe?

Asiding the fact it will cost some money to purchased, crated, shipped over here to the states; where are we going to get the parts? If I understand this correctly, there are no parts here in the states so stocking up will be a priority to keep a running rig. I dont care how reliable of a rig it is, it's bound to break down at one point in time or another.

This got my mind rotating............
We'll try to hook up with the AZ guys for the AZ run next year. How about us bringing a 2.7TD Terrano (first gen. Pathfinder) over, wheel it thru the run and then sell it to you guys ? We could take a relativly rusty truck with proper engine and tranny because we wouldn't need any german safety inspections anymore. This would be a 2.7 TD (TD27) with 100hp or much more expensive a (TD27) 2.7 TDi with 125hp. Spares could be arranged thru me. What'ya think ? Bart, I am in! Name your price!
I want the 4.5 if it is available in the older trucks. Would settle for the 2.7. What kind of pricing you thinking? You have any friends who could bring one over too? I am sure I am not the only one that wants one. |

Bart.
For the patrol, If you could get some revolver shackles to put on it temporarily, I bet that thing would flex like crazy offroad... would make the terrain here a peice of cake. --------------------------- |
