When the AC is on.

I had to replace the crank pulley, as well as the idler pulley for the AC v-belt. Today, I finally got around to reinstalling the idler pulley and new belt.

When the AC is on, I noticed the engine temp is higher than normal.. probably 3/4 of the way to hot. AC off, it drops down to below half.

Also, I noticed the AC isn't blowing ice cold anymore. It probably needs a recharge.

What can cause the temp to rise almost 1/4 of the gauge? Is that normal?

Is it at all times or at idle only? Or only when going up hills? DR and myself have had problems with heat last year (actually it was DL that had the problem I think).

My issue was anytime I was going up the hills or at long idles I was getting very hot. I know my fix doesn't make sense but I put on a trany cooler and have it bypassing the radiator, hence not having my radiator work extra hard to cool the trany. Guess what, no problem with heat this summer (yet).

Otherwise, I am sure you get to check everything else...

4 cyl, manual trans.... no tranny cooler.

I noticed it just now, at idle in my driveway, at running speeds, it is slightly warmer.

POssible causes:
Too much antifreeze in your coolant mix. NOte: Water cools better than antifreeze by almost 2 times.
I wouldn't run more than 30% where you're at+ a few ounces of "water wetter".

A bad fan clutch.

It's normal on body-lifted trucks w/ restricted airflow to the radiator.

Shroud and fan not alligned.

torchNormal for trucks running in heeell.

That was my V6 auto Xterra running hot. My Frontier has never run hot. Start with a thermostat like zanegrey says. Also, do a coolant flush with a 50/50 mix.

your water pump might be getting tired.

Tranny coolers aren't used on a manual.

I would start by flushing out the radiator. Also cleaning the radiator physically.

on my recent trip to the desert i tried to run the air on the way back once i got on the road, and the temp gauge went up to 3/4, and started slowly creeping up to hot.
i just replaced the water pump too. i guess its a common thing for you guys dealing with the arizona heat.

my fan shroud is mangled a little because we had to cut it to avoid the fan hitting the shroud when flexed out.
i have an efan ready to go in. hopefully that will be the end of that. i might add a tranny cooler also.

There is no way your going to get more airflow out of an electric fan than out of the manual setup.

Greg, you might also try a helper fan on the radiator.

The water pump was changed approx 60-70k ago.

Never have changed the t-stat. I've heard they're a PITA to get to on the KA24DE.

I will try a radiator flush, and I recently cleaned the fins of the radiator.

It only runs hot when the air is on.

Changing the thermostat is just as hard as the water pump.... not very hard (well not as hard as some cars out there).

BE CAREFUL... As with almost everything else on our truck the thermostat housing is cast aluminum, so DON'T OVER TORQUE. I snapped and ear off mine, and I found that only the dealer carries it. Luckily the truck was only down for one more day. But be careful.

Tstat is pretty easy on the 4 banger. On the V6, it's a pain in the ass.
