Called AC to order some goodies, ARB Airlocker (F/R) compressor and new short shaft and Mike proceeded to tell me I'd better count my splines because there have been some 00 that are supposed to be 33 splined showing up with 31 splines.

So tonight I get to pull a shaft and count. Let's hope for 31 cause then I can get the Detroit Locker instead...

Let you know how it goes..

Cool! I actually haven't heard of any '00 models with the 31 spline. '99 was the changeover year where both occurred. Of course that's not to say it can't happen. I have an '00 H233B axle and a 33 spline locker, but still haven't disassembled to do the install yet. My fingers are crossed smile

The wiring harness for the ARB compressor is a snap. You'll appreciate how well laid out it is.

The locker is a beautiful thing.

Andy,

After this last trip out West, it's time for lockers. Rock crawling with open diffs sucks. Really looking forward to the install and use, just wish I could do both by Slade, KY next month, but will have one of them in.

I've got one of those nifty porta tanks like John's....been saving and waiting for the compressor, with a resevoir tank in the bed, I can run all my airtools on board now and airing up shouldn't take as long either.

Sooooo Stoked, to get this done plus the new heim steering.

Can't wait for AZ 3 and Calirun 2!

If I was shopping for lockers for a 1998, what would I have for options? What do you guys suggest? And how do they affect everyday driving and drivetrain components? How easy is the install, is it someone with some basic mechanic knowledge, plenty of tools and a service manual can do?

Your only option is an ARB locker designed for an '85 or older 720 with the C200 rear. Automotive Customizers sells them. On my '98 there was some machining to be done on the master shim to get the rear diff backlash within spec. Also, we had to take 1/8" off each axleshaft to make them fit back in. Wasn't a clean install and it ended up being pretty expensive. The results were worth it to me, but expect to spend extra cash on the install. You should have a C200 axle with 4.625:1 gearing.

Another bet is to find a 99+ 4x4 Frontier (gotta be a 4wd to have a spring over) and steal the H233B rear out of it. If it's the 33 spline, ARB is again your only option. If it's 31 spline, you can get a Detroit or Lockrite in addition to an ARB. '99 was the crossover year and both the 31 and 33 spline axles are out there. The reason for wanting a 99+ is because they have the same 4 sensor ABS you should have on your '98 and it would be a direct bolt in, provided you can find the pinion end of the driveshaft from the ujoint out for the larger axle.

The C200 has a 200 mm ring gear and is a C-clip axle design much like most Dana axles. It's comparable in size to a D44 and carries 30 spline shafts. The H233B has a 233mm ring gear (about 9.25") and has a removable 3rd member much like a Ford 9 inch axle. 31 spline axles were available up to '99, and 33 spline axles were the standard after that.

Since I have an H233B out of a 2000 truck myself with an ARB ready to install, if you're looking for a deal, I'd be willing to part with my entire C200 axle complete with ARB locker installed and a diff skid plate for $750 if you come get it in Arizona. It will bolt directly into your truck in about 2 hours. All you'd need is the ARB compressor, switches, air line, and wiring harness. Let me know if you're interested. I'll be doing the swap in the next couple months. Consider that the locker cost me $600, install another $400 and the diff skid another $120 and it's a SMOKING deal.

Hope this helps.

I am very interested, and if it were to be a few months, that would be even better. Are there any options for the front on a 1998?

Hey Pecker,

Since Andy is buying: round of lockers for everyone!

That is a smokin deal and don't be surprised if the law doesn't chase you out of AZ for stealing.. roll eyes

Having the H233B makes it alot easier to install, but getting an axle with all that ready to go in 2 hours for under a grand is off the hook.

You have an R180 front and there's not much out there for it. Find an R200 from an Xterra or Frontier V6 and swap it in. All halfshafts, etc. are interchangeable.

I'll let you know when I'm ready to swap axles.

I think I will just set my goals on the rear for now, seems it might be worth taking it one step at a time.

So is it possible to scavenge some older axles and get the Detroit for mine. Would the price difference be worth it? I don't plan on putting in a front locker until after an SAS in a few years.

It may be worth it, but older axles have different ABS. I do believe you can put the 3rd member and axle shafts in a newer model out of a 31 spline equipped HB or Pathy assuming the housings are the same width.

Trust me 2000 Frontiers did have 31 spline axles.

Trust me I did an ARB install on one. 2 days later we got the 31 spline ARB and sent back the 33 spline one. The truck did have an open rear not an LSD. MVM you know who's truck I am talking about I think.
