Hello everybody,

Is it ok to ignore the check engine light on a 4cyl Frontier? The truck runs fine. The light came on after a hard rain here in Texas. If it's nothing major, i am just going to unplug the idiot light. Any advice?

Thanks

I would think its never ok to ignore a check engine light on anything. Simplest thing to do would be to take it to autozone and have them plug their OBD-II reader into your truck and see what it says. Then go from there.

You might want to have the codes read. If everything is good then there must be a short somewhere causing the idiot light to stay on. Generally if the check engine light is on something's wrong.

So, Autozone can plug their computer to my truck and give me some kind of code. Then start from there; or are they going to be able to tell me what's wrong with it? thanks in advance,

Autozone will read the trouble code your truck is coming up with. Its free. The code with get you close to where the problem is coming from.

Try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, and drive for a while to see if it comes back on.

I was plagued by this with my '98 frontier 4 banger and had to replace multiple pieces in the smog control system to later found out I had a bad charcoal cannister, and charcoal was being sucked up the lines and into all the other smog pieces.

I disconnected the bat cable(+) and the light is gone. Does this mean that the truck is ok now? Thanks

Your truck is just fine. When you disconnect the batt and reconnect you restart the computer. Everything is fine now.

It's been a couple of days now and no idiot light yet. If it comes back, i'll take it to autozone and get them to plug the magic box to it. I blame the cheap gas for it. Thanks a bunch

Could also be a bad gas cap. If I don't tighten mine all the way it will trough a MIL after a little while. I drove all the way somewhere in Illinois to South Carolina with mine on, I forgot the gas cap.
