Well I don't have a roof rack so I vote for the tailgate. That way you can build 2 and sell me 1 Big Grin

haha , gonna leave it on the roof for now i think then design a carrier for the truck , the one on there i made up real quick a couple months ago , i think thats why it looks off to me

Bob i thought you were making one up with a buddy of yours?
if you can come up with a good idea for the hinges i can make one up for ya , probably be best if it mounted to your bumper for the strength and not just the bed sides

I like the tailgate. If her truck is her primary daily drive I would not remove the tailgate. once you drop down the tail gate your truck will lose a lot of fuel economy.

I'm so busy at work right now that I don't even get my hour toilet break in the afternoons anymore, heck, even my posting here has gone down. Haven't played in the Stock Market since last Nov.

One day when my work goes away, I will look into getting my design and start building one. My friend bought a 57 Jeep that he is restoring and was hoping to come out with us last AZ Run, but the way it's going it might be AZ RUN XI... let alone help me make a tire-gate.

i think the tube gate/tire carrier looks way better... hides the gap in between the bumper and bed... if she doesn't use the bed a lot, I would definately go that route Chug

According to "Mythbusters" this is a myth. Due to the swirling air filling the bed, any additional air will flow over that and off of the truck, just as if you had the tailgate open.

Penski, to me it's hard to decide, without seeing different angles and having the tire on there.
Is that bumper mounted as it will stay?

Did you watch the episode where they took 2 brand new trucks, same model, same year, almost the same miles. They topped both trucks off with fuel (regular), one drove the truck with the tail gate down the other drove the truck with the tailgate up.

The truck with the tail gate down ran out of fuel first. The truck with the tail gate up drove for another ~50 miles.

Either way, putting that tire on the roof isn't exactly aerodynamic.

Eventually I will build a tire gate. After someone backed into my stock tail gate I have 1k to put into a new gate. I'll keep the stock one for when it is needed but will run the tube gate on a regular basis.

what does having the tailgate down have ANYTHING to do with what we're talking about?! with the tube gate, the tailgate is removed, not layed down. in the episode of MythBusters, when the tailgate was down, it created more drag, because there was as much air coming underneath the truck, as was going into the bed... removing the tail gate all-together, according to that test would only be better for fuel economy...

I realize that this is not one of the options, but have you considered moving the tire hoist's crossmember up and mounting the spare back underneath? I was able to move mine up 4" without any body lift. By shortening my exhaust and centering the hoist, I tuck a 33x12.50 under there.

Clever as YOU are, you might be able to raise it seven or eight inches.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

i would keep it under the bed for normal driving, and put it in the bed for offroading. honestly, unless she is going to be hauling a ton of camping equipment in the bed and won't have room, then what is the point? it would just be cosmetic. its not like its a huge tire or anything.

maybe mount it vertically inside of the tail gate, with the longside of the tire running parallel with the truck.
maybe like this?
