Im considering replacing my "well used" 87 pathfinder with a 97-00 Frontier. Im quite familiar with the (w)d21 series, but dont know anything about the newer trucks. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good FAQ on these trucks? Also any help with some specific questions would be great:

real world gas mileage V6/4cyl?
Std cab wheelbase compared to Pathfinder?
Diff models V6/4cyl?
Gear ratios?
Is there such thing as a V6 std cab?
Problem areas/years to avoid?
Other changes from d21?

Thanks

Frontier came out in 98....... the 4 bangers get about 20 mpg... the 2001 ( 4cyl) has a stronger exhaust manifold( won't crack so easily as the 98's)

you should see my friends truck, he has a 2001 std cab. he dropped a S/C v6 in there and modded everything himself. As we speak he is putting on his suspension lift and body lift. Its really cool but he drives like a manic!

Anyway you should drop a v6 in a std cab, finding one in a junk yard or ebay. it gives the reg cab alot of crunch

Ya I off road alot, if you count sidewalks!

Must have been a 2wd, eh? Reg cab 4x4's were discontinued in '99.

That is a good setup - reg cab for the same wheelbase as a Pathy, and a V6 drivetrain. Unfortunately they didn't come that way. Look for a V6 truck. Extended and crew cabs through the 2000 model year had a two piece rear driveshaft and carrier bearing failures are common. Also, the steering centerlinks are crap - but probably no worse than on the D21 trucks. That's about it for the common problems I can think of.

1998 Frontier 4x4 seriously built
2002 Xterra 4x4 still stock
