Guy in my neighborhood makes these and sells them for $35-40. He makes D44 and D30 and can probably make most anything else with a template. They are 5/8"s, solid rod.

what four bolts... you have to remove the whole cover...why does that seem like a messy job to me?

dana hubs normally don't have a drain plug. Just about all that I've seen, you have to take the cover off to drain them. drain plugs are usually only on 3rd member style pumpkins, but there are a few exceptions (like front pumpkins with IFS).
