So my 2000 C.C. Has got a real bad whining noise coming from the front of the engine. It started about 2 months ago and has gotten worse. It sounds like the water pump is going out but i am not leaking or going thru water. I take it out af town allot and I would hate to break down away from home. Is there any way to tell what it could be?
I had a ford truck a while ago and it started sounding exactally like that then the water pump went out, but it only took like a week to happen and it was leaking. This has been going on a while.
Any ideas??

Does it get worse when you turn the steering wheel?

could be time for new idler pulleys. Don't know how they're rigged up on a V6, tho, just the 4bangers. Might be similar part.

Here's some how-to's

There are also times where the air conditioning pump bearing will start to make a whining noise...Just start to narrow it down part by part.

All right. For starters it is not the power steering pump. It's ok. 1 down xx to go.
How do i narrow it down from there. Is there any way to check the pulleys? AC pump?

Go get a mechanics stethescope from Harbor Freight. They are around $4 or so and will save a ton of time when isolating funny noises.

Well i have been out of town and I haven't had a chance to check it. But if it is a idler pully, is that a problem I should worry about or not?

They seem to keep spinning. Orange4ska posted a how to some time back on rebuilding them with cheap parts store bearings instead of paying $50+ for a new one from Nissan.

The whining is common on certain east coast Xterras. Has your vehicle been over on XOC?
