Has anyone seen this?

Friday after work, I was driving home. I heard a horrible sqeuealing sound and smelled burning rubber. So, I immediately pulled over, and popped the hood to see the AC belt smoldering. I cut it off w/ my knife, and started the truck back up.

While the truck was running, I was looking in the engine bay, and discovered the crank pulley wobbles VERY badly.

Called ABC, and got a new pulley and belts (all 3) on the way for 200 bux. This pulley is kind of an "all in one." It has three grooves for the belts, and the harmonic balancer.

So, for now, I am driving the truck, without the AC belt attached, and there's no noises, and the truck actually feels like it has more power.

Couple Q's...
- Is it okay to drive around with the pulley being wobbly until this weekend?
- What could have caused this failure?

I am going to try to take a video of the pulley when I get home from work. Wink

Found this article just now, but they are referring to a Ford Escort. Failure symptoms are identical to issues I've been having. Interesting read:

quote:
Two-Piece Pulley
Many manufacturers use a crankshaft pulley with a two-piece design, consisting of the central "hub," an outer "drive ring," and a high-density rubber composite "absorption layer" sandwiched in between. Variations of this design have been in use for decades with great reliability. It's not uncommon to see original equipment pulleys still in service on '60s-era vehicles.

The nature of the failure of the pulley design considered in this article has to do with a loss of adhesion between the rubber absorption layer and the outer ring, hub, or both. In other words, the outer ring, which turns the belt driving the engine's accessory pulleys, slips in relation to the inner ring.

This slippage can sometimes result in a misalignment between the two, which will cause the pulley to visibly "wobble" with the engine running. It can also cause a constant slip, while the pulley appears to be turning straight and true.

As you can probably imagine, all sorts of trouble would result under such a condition, from low charging system output, to poor and inconsistent power steering assist and air conditioning operation, as well as higher cooling system operating temperatures. Not to mention operating noise.

I have actually seen such pronounced slippage that, after removal, I could induce it while holding the pulley in my hands. That's even more amazing when you consider that the unit was still turning concentrically while mounted on the engine!

Yep, sounds like that might be the failure you are seeing.

Once you get the old one off, take some pics of it so we can see whats up.

As long as the other belts appear to be tracking somewhat straight, it should be OK to drive. Take a cell phone and stock the truck with a cooler full of ice and water though just in case.. Its stinkin hot out over the next few days (was 113F here today!).

If the waterpump/fan belt goes, the truck WILL overheat. So, listen for noises, and watch the temp gauge.

Been watching all the gauges like a hawk. Noises seem to have subsided after taking the AC belt off... The chatter you hear is the pulley bouncing around Frown This is a one piece assembly... all three pulleys are tied together, as well as the Harmonic Balancer.

Here's a vid of the floppy pulley. I took this when I got home. Damaged Pulley

You might want to check the 4 bolts that attach the pully/harmonic balancer to the part that slides onto the crank shaft. Thats if yours is like my KA24E on my 91.

I have an '89 Nissan Hardbody King Cab with a Chevy truck/Blazer 4" suspension lift and 3" body lift. It will soon have a TBI 350, SM-465 4 speed trans and 208 T-case rounded off with 39" tires.

I am supposed to get the replacement from ABC sometime tomorrow. I may pull a late night, and change it out tomorrow.

Trust me... I don't like driving it like that at all :/

The main reason why I didn't drive to Phx w/ my truck this weekend.

Whoa, thats nuts! The front 2 pulleys look like they are running true.
When you pull it apart, check the connection between the pulleys to see how they are put together.

Are you able to turn the A/C compressor clutch by hand to verify the compressor isnt seized?

The pulley itself normally freewheels unless the clutch locks it in to spin the compressor. Make sure you are turning the front part of the compressor clutch. Start the truck, turn the A/C on from the dash (to lock the compressor clutch), and then try to turn the compressor pulley.

They are usually pretty hard to turn by hand, but if yours turns, it isnt seized.

Well, as usual, ABC rocks! Had the pulley and new belts waiting for me at the door when I got home from Stacy's parents.

So, today, I am gonna stop by the parts store, and rent a puller/installer, and go to town. I plan on taking a bunch of pics, as well as listing tools needed, and do a write-up for the board.

Peace out.
