I just picked up a set of front coil springs from an 82 2wd F100 pick up. (the first step in my lift) The springs are very rusty, does any have suggestions on the best way to clean them sandblast/chemical dip or other?

Sandblast them and hit them with a coat of primer/paint.

If you have an angle grinder, you can pick up a wire wheel attachment and go at it.

I'll be doing that soon, i like the wirewheel/paint method better, not having access to free sandblasting.

Speaking of rust... any suggestions about how to repair the frame on my pathy? it looks pretty weak in a couple places, although its held up so far... grind/cut and weld on new plates? That can get expensive for us non-welders...

yeah, you'll pretty much need to grind and weld in new plates on the frame. I would suggest finding someone with a plasma cutter. Would make short work of cutting it out.

FWIW, welding work on frames is not that expensive. If you only have a few spots on the frame and they are reasonably accessible, i bet you could have them repaired by a pro for a hundred bucks or so, since it would really take no time at all to do it. If i was doing that for someone, i wouldnt charge more than that.

If you don't have access to an angle grinder, I know they may wire wheel attachments for drills, not sure how good they work, but it is another possibility.

Other than looking bad, surface rust on springs isn't a big deal.

Smokey, where in SD? I went to school in Spearfish and worked in Deadwood-Lead for a while back in the early 90's....
