What are the limiting factors of wheel travel? Just shock length? If so, then what are the draw backs when shock length is increased? Just flex?

I want to get the most out of my stock setup without unnecessary wear.

Thanks

Kind of a broad question. What kind of vehicle do you have? What kind of modifications have you made?

On mine, wheel travel is limited by the shock travel in front, and in the rear, I'm limited by the small amount of weight that's back there.

The vehicle is a 01 CC 4x4 SE. The only mods are Gibson exhaust, K&N Filter, and I just added BFG A/T 31's. My thought is if I changed the shocks I can get more wheel travel than stock. That's where the first 'post' then begins.

In front, you are screwed. You have IFS, and will never have more than a couple inches of wheel travel. There really isn't anyway to remedy this. That's just how it goes. IFS sucks. In the back, you can have custom springs made that are longer, and a softer spring rate, and with a longer shackle, and a longer shock, you could increase wheel travel. Just putting on a longer shock would increase downtravel, but decrease uptravel.

How much change do you see if you add one of the 3inch lifts? Or is that just clearance? Thanks for the Info!

That's just clearance because of the torsion bar setup on Nissan trucks. When you do a suspension lift, you are simply decreasing the downtravel, and increasing the uptravel.

There's more than a couple inches of wheel travel in a Nissan IFS.

looks like about 9inches.
9inches = couple inches
That must be government calculations.

Your info is great help. Thanks!!

Way is there hardly any AZ trail runs listed at base camp? I thought I'd see runs listed every weekend. I know 2-3 rated trails for stock trucks are to boring for mods like yours.

If I take the time to post one will anyone show?

I'm sure you can get people to come. Try to set a date a few months in advance so people can plan for it though. If you are just trying to do the weekend deal, just see who's going where and hitch along.

Kraised, since you live here in the Valley, please check the SWANKy forum. That's where we list our runs out here. Usually there is someone wanting to do something sometime. So either be watching to see when one is coming up, or if you want to go out somewhere in particular, post it, and I'm sure someone will go out with you.

It's not too hot if you have the good sense to keep your roof, windows, and air conditioning.

Yeah, but that stuff's dangerous. Roofs can cave in, windows can shatter, and air conditioning can be too much of a luxury. Razz

Who needs Air Cond.? Smile My compressor pulley died a couple years ago, so I've been removing my AC system piece by piece ever since! But, then again, it's only hot here in MN 3 months out of twelve, and REALLYcold 7 out of twelve, and comfortable 2 out of twelve!
