Generally speaking, 30 to 40 inches is sufficient, with anything over 60 inches being just plain gnarly, and bordering on "stupid flex". What these numbers entail, is the total amount of up and down travel combined, at all 4 wheels.
For example, my former IFS Nissan had 30" of total wheel travel. 26" of it was in the rear due in part to the Revolver shackles. Most of it was down travel. Some prefer a 50/50 split in both weight distribustion, and flex. Most rigs I've driven hasn't had this, so I'm comfy w/a 60/40 split (60% rear flex, 60% front weight bias, 40% front flex, 40% rear weight lightness). IFS was closer to a 90/10 though. It worked, and I got used to it, but I'd like at least a 60/40. After the SAS, who knows what weight distribution and spring distribution will be! It'll be another vehicle! Not easily. Total Chaos has some kits that give 8".
You would have to go custom. Easier/cheaper to do with a SAS. Barry 93 D21 King Cab SE - 35s, SAS + stuff 92 Pathfinder SE - Auto SAS 3 link 04 Quest SE - stock, perfect!!! |

on the total chaos site all the suspension i found was for toyotas, nothin for nissans. their kit tho allowed for up to 12 inches up front, damn good
u could probly make control arms for longer travel pretty easily, just have to decide to either remove the torsion bars and run on coilovers or do some more research. i've thought about it a little bit, but 1st i need another vehicle for daily driving before i try it out, in case i screw somethin up badly. looks like i'll be gettin the calmini lift 1st, long before i try to design my setup. 94 suburban 4x4, plan on a diesel swap with a manual tranny, 6" lift, maybe rear steering |

They make a Xterra/Fronty 4WD IFS long travel kit. The other kits for the 2wd D22 (fronty) and D21. Barry 93 D21 King Cab SE - 35s, SAS + stuff 92 Pathfinder SE - Auto SAS 3 link 04 Quest SE - stock, perfect!!! |

It's easy to get 14"+ out of solid axles (at one end!). Add both axle travel numbers together (as stated earlier), and that's what total travel is (24" or better!). A stock Hardbody has 14" of TOTAL wheel travel (4" in front, 10" in rear). This is why we get passed up on the trail stock for stock with a TJ, YJ, and some CJ Jeeps (and other solid axle stock rigs). They have more stock travel, keeping their tires on the ground longer.

my dad wont let me do an sas tho, and since i'm still in high school and living at home then i gotta listen to him. i've got a couple of ideas on how to make the long travel ifs suspension, i just gotta pay off my truck 1st and do a couple of other things(like buy ur old steering nissanproject) down to the last 1 1/2 weeks of payments, so it wont be long.

I am talking about one tire.I assume 20" per tire is enough regardless of if it's ifs or solid.

20" is awesome. Race trucks have 20-24" per tire. I can get 10" with my SAS setup now. My shocks are 11.7". Barry 93 D21 King Cab SE - 35s, SAS + stuff 92 Pathfinder SE - Auto SAS 3 link 04 Quest SE - stock, perfect!!! |

Baja racers usually have more uptravel than down travel (60/40 split normally), where rockcrawlers have more down travel than uptravel (40/60 for the trail rig, 20/80 for some purpose built crawlers). Few rigs have 20" per wheel! That would be approx 80" of travel at all four corners! Old school crawlers used to do that, but they found out it was TOO MUCH TRAVEL! Those Baja racers have 20-24" of travel per axle, designed to have the axle droop in the middle as well as side to side for impact landings. A driveshaft couldn't handle a 40" droop! The old school extreme crawlers w/80" of flex, had limiting straps (that technology still used in modern crawlers) in the center of the axle, to allow side to side droop, but kept the driveshaft alive if teh whole axle were to droop.
