Well,

I did the Jeep GC V8 springs in the rear of my 90 last night. Previously the left side of the car sagged. I adjusted the torsion bars a week ago, which really didnt make one bit of difference. Now i know why.

The nut thats supposed to be welded to the crossmember broke its weld. I have no idea how many times the torsion bar was actually adjusted before the nut broke, so im gonna have to take everything apart and start from scratch. I can hold the nut with a wrench and turn the adjusting bolt, thats not an issue. Im just wondering if i should tighten to max and back off about 10-15 quarter turns, or if i should loosen all the way and start tightening from there.

Tightening to max and then backing off seems the logical way to go, but who am i...you guys know better. Smile

The nuts are not welded. There is a ball-and-socket type joint on top of the crossmember. The nut seats on top of the ball portion, which is flat on top. If you were to remove the adjusting bolt, the half-ball would just be sitting there.

As far as adjusting goes, I adjust mine a little at a time until both sides are even. It may not necesarily be a certain number of turns. I, personnally, measure from the LCA pivot to the driveway and compare sides. Doing it that way requires a smooth, flat, level surface and a good bit of trial and error.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

Ahhh thanks. I was under the impression the nut was welded, i could have sworn i read that somewhere. Makes sense now, i can finally get rid of that lame sagging on the drivers side.

It kinda sucks the exhaust runs along the drivers side torsion bar. We all know what heat does to metals over time Frown

I usually tighten up the t-bars until both sides look even. Then at the alignment shop I ask the tech re-index the t-bars. He'll make where both front and left frame rails are at the same level.

I've had good luck re-indexing them myself, as well as doing alignments with a tape measure and string. Time consuming? Yes.

The first time I reindexed I went way too far and the adjusters were hanging below the crossmember by a couple inches. But this worked out since I didn't need to do it again when the lift parts went on.
