I have a '90 Hardbody, and this is my first vehicle with torsion bars. I was wondering what maintance is involved with them....I have heard things about re-indexing? How do you go about re-indexing torsion bars? Do they ever wear out and need replacement? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

If you're going to keep it stock then new ones probably won't be necessary. The problem with them is that they do sag if you have a big bumper/winch up front, or even if you're just lifted.(well...most lifts)
I have a winch and stuff on the front of mine with no lift and it hasn't sagged down more than .5" in 3 years. Re-indexing is just pulling the tbar anchor off the bar and rotating it, then sticking back on. This just gives you more room to adjust the tbars higher. If you're doing a tbar-related lift(AC, Rancho, Calmini,...or just cranking) and you run out of room to crank, you have to reindex. I cranked mine up when I bought it cause the front end was way lower that the rear and I didn't have to reindex. Aftermarket tbars will be stiffer and won't sag down nearly as bad as stock ones. I've found them for $150 for my truck and I'm thinking about buying them before I do my lift. Hope that helps Mr. Will Give me ambiguity or give me something else. |
