I sunk the Pirate Ship in quicksand today... no water inside, but the rock sliders were touching the water and both axles were buried in quicksand. 11doh

Here's the story..

My friend Jesse and I went out target shooting out at upper sycamore this afternoon. Got about an hour of shooting in before it started raining...

So, we thought, what a great opportunity to go wheeling! We went down to the sycamore creek entrance behind the Fort McDowell Adventure Tour place, where we exited last time.

Sycamore creek had some water in it.. it was flowing pretty good. We aired down and headed upstream. Got about 200ft upstream and the pirateship started sinking. Threw it in reverse and managed to get out of the quicksand. Turned around and headed downstream and decided to play in the deeper water, which is where I got stuck.

The truck managed to move about 6ft towards dry sand on its own power, but it kept digging deeper until all I could see were the tops of the tires. The rock sliders were touching the water at the point it just started digging in...

After climbing out and monkeying around the outside of the truck to get to my recovery gear, I climbed out on the hood and got the winch cable unspooled and tossed over to Jesse. He hooked up and I slowly winched out.

It took about 12ft of winching before the tires started climbing up out of the quicksand, but I made it!

So, now I need to repack wheel bearings, clean out my parking brake, and change fluid in the axles.

11doh

I guess I'm in the quicksand club now.

I got a pic of the creek before we went in, but after I got stuck, we were concentrating on getting my truck unstuck, so didn't get any photos.

People must like you out there in AZ, whenever I get stuck, it seems like people fly in from all over the world. Last time there were at least 50 witnesses. Lucky for me, Ricardo rolled his eXterra and took the heat off of me. Wink

Everything above the axles is OK.. My truck is pretty tall, so with the axles submerged, the body was still out of the quicksand.

Nice!

That stuff is nasty and gets into everything!

when I pulled my front calipers, I pulled the inner pad out, and sand just poured out of the hollow piston area.

Sounds like you need some breathers on your diffs. Keeps the water out, but still lets the diff breath when it needs to.

And it saves you from having to change the gear oil every time you get into some water.

Because I can, that's why...
