Can any of you tell me if you have the MTR's as I'm thinking of the 255/70 R16. Posted this ? on other Forum that we just found but nothing. I noticed that the pathy forums are not that busy. Well about the Tires if you own a fairly new Pathy-00-04 and you bought these tires how do you like them and is true about the 25%decrease in gas mileage as I think this would be a rumor. Oh how are they clearence wise.Is there any rubbing when offroading. As they are a tad taller tire.
Thanks alot!!

Hi,

Many folks out here run MTR's and they seem to be an excellent tire.

FWIW, I have BFG M/T's, and yes, my mileage took a solid 2 mpg hit when I put them on. Not 25% (thankfully), but went to about 16 city/18 hwy, driving nicely. And I keep them aired up (38 psi or so). I think you'd find similar mileage decreases with all the "offroad" mudder style tires.

Just switched to K&N air filter and synthetic oil, and I've gained back a good 1+ mpg (confirmed over several tanks of gas). And the truck runs smoother now.

Welcome to the board, btw. Sorry, can't speak to fitment for the R50, as I have a Crew Cab. Smile

It's a good tire. Make sure to keep them rotated and balanced. I do mine(not MTRs, offbrand) at every oil change.

Is 255/70/16 an available size for an MTR? I don't think it is. I know they have 265/75/16 (about 32")

Mikey could confirm tho.

DorkI noticed decreased mileage w/ mine, but then I just pumped them up to 40- no more problem.

Yes 255/70 R16 is a size for that tire as I confirmed it with the Shop as they are going to get them in for me, oh but not until may because he said that's when they are going to go on sale. He said the Mtr's are 30.9" so almost 2" more.
Have a ? for the person with the K&R air filter I was reading and they said that for offroad use it was chancy because they let in small particles as with the better breathability. So how long have you been using the air filter and have you heard of that?

I've been using a K&N forever(3 years) and mine runs fine. I've heard these things, but K&N wouldn't be selling them if they hurt your motor badly.

Hi,

Some filtration info and tests from the K&N site can be found here.

I feel comfortable that it will filter better than the cheap disposable paper filters will. When I took the airbox apart, there was a fine "webbing" (for lack of a better word)of ultra fine dust in the air intake that the paper filter let thru, but that was driving thru some seriously dusty conditions.

My intial impression is that it wouldn't be anything to harm the engine, but it was there all the same. Give me a coupla weekends of AZ dirt roads and I'll let you know how the K&N does in comparison. Smile

Lots of people use them, on and off-road, in some of the worst conditions ever. I used them for years on dirt bikes and never had an issue.

Regards,

-matt

I've got about 35K on my MT/R's (32's on 15x8 rims). They're about half worn with 2 of 'em a little worse for having been up front for like 15K (yes I am lazy) When its time to replace them they are certanly on the short list...I'd also consider BFG M/T's or the Bstone Dueler.

Run 'em up to 40 eh bille...hmmm have to try that. I'd be nice to get some mpg's back...mind the JWT ECU is drinking some of that Big Grin

I only have them on back(no rotate) and I do monitor them w/ a tread depth gauge. They are 1/16" shallower in the center than on the sides- not too bad for 25,000 miles. There's stilll alot of tread left. I keep the front 235/75 BFG's a little higher( and they wear more on the shoulder than the center).

This is waht works for me,w/ my tire sizes, truck gross weight and rim width- gonna be different if yours is , which is likely.

I'm also curious as to whether prissie's size will fit or 245/75/16's which ought to be roughly the same outside diameter... I have an LE with the 17 inch rims - if I go to steel 16" rims, I should be able to get away with the 245/75's cause they are only roughly .5-.75" larger than stock (from the wheel center - 1.5 inches larger total) if www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html is correct!
