Hi everyone, what a great site! I just recently purchased 97 Pathfinder with 106K miles. I like it well except that it seems to missfire or lack of power @ 4000 RPM. I have replaced the air filter, plugs, fuel filter, wires, cap, and rotor. It seems to be intermittent, meaning sometimes it runs up to 5K w/no problems, other times it stutters @ 4K and above. I was thinking it may be OS sensors or perhaps fuel pump issue. Haven't had into Nissan yet. Idle is smooth and starts well all the time. No power issues below 4K RRM. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I really need some help here if anyone has an idea.

I had the same problem it got progresively worse and only after it had warmed up some. The coil was bad..IF

it has the problem under acceleration
it happens after the engine is warm
it acts like it is missfiring
gets worse over the next weeks

It's your coil, get a new distributor. the Distributers off of Frontiers and Xterras with the V-6 will work even though it's a different part number.

doubtful the 02s should throw codes...and you would probably get a fuel preassure code...

with the coil going out you MIGHT get a missfire code, sometimes I would, sometimes not

Thank you for your response. This seems to make sense. All of the issues you mention seem to apply. It does seem like it is getting progressively worse. The temperature does not seem to make a difference. I call NAPA and Nissan. These things are very expensive right? $369 or $399 from Nissan. I have a service manual does not seem real difficult to fix. Your thoughts?

Thanks again so much for your help.

I'm sure this is unrelated to the symptoms you're describing, but, the mileage you mention- it sounds like it's time to ge t the timing belt changed.... I wouldn't delay.

I paid $150 for mine off a 2001 Xterra. It's very easy to install. really you need a timing light and to put the computer into diag mode (read the how to set timing in the haynes manual or FSM).

Well the problem persists. I took the R50 to the local foreign auto repair shop? Checked all the codes, none found. These guys are supposed to be good. Disputed the idea it might be a coil or distributor. Thinks it may be the mass air flow meter? Did not think it was electrical. I don't know. Please help.

Thanks much.

The MAF is easy to clean, just remove it and spray it down with electrical contact cleaner. Just be careful and not touch it, very fragile and expensive to replace.

After more reading on the subject it apprears the MAF is more of a low RPM sensor and doesn't seem to affect the higher RPM perfomance issues. Thoughts?

Thanks.
