I just got a 2000 Xterra 5 spd two days ago. So far, I like it, though there are a few bugs I need to work out.

Thanks for all the comments!

I was gonna ask why a 96-98 ... the 95's and earlier have more 5 speeds adn an LSD the Xterra guys would kill to get.

As for your X if you did get the LSD then consider adding a pair of friction disks to the unit in order to get LDS up to a better breakaway torque.

I was looking for something newer because I needed something as dependable as possible with as little effort as possible. I'm a grad student in biology and I study two species of frogs all over NC. Lots of driving, including in some hairy terrain, and my old truck was a major drag on my ability to get work done. A 95 may be more capable than the newer ones offroad, and Japanese vehicles may be more reliable overall than what I was used to, but a 95 is still pushing ten years old.

Even in the first week of ownership of this 2000 Xterra I've been having troubles. I think it sat around for a while at the wholesaler before it came to me. It wouldn't start earlier in the week even though the battery is new because the positive battery terminal connector was a corroded mess (after three days of BSing with local parts stores and the area's dealership, I got an OEM replacement that I still haven't installed). And the cigarette lighter jacks don't have power so I can't charge up my electronic gear or use the radar detector, both important things in my world. Ah, car ownership. Once I get the stupid little things resolved, I'll see what I can do about mods.
