Hi:

I have one tough 1997 Nissan Pathfinder 4X4 XE.
I replaced my brake pads and noticed only one piston was extented. I pushed the extended piston back with a c-clamp and the other piston did not extend. So i thought i had a stuck piston, it was however extended enough that i could put a clamp on it and push in a little. It did move back in, so it was not stuck. But this piston does not seem to react at all to pressing the brake or pushing in on the other piston. I also have a code P0400 for Exhaust gas recirculation flow. I pushed in on the egr valve, taken off the hose to the egr, put my finger on it to test vacuum, and it did hold vacuum. Anything else that would set off this code. Any help would be great thanks, george.

It sounds like you neeed to R&R that caliper.

I had a similar problem once. I ended up tearing upart the caliper and finding one piston crooked inthe bore( just a little)

It looked like the pistone was some kind of chromed over plastic. I replaced both pistons and the seals and have been fine since.

If you're not comfortable w/ rebuilding a caliper you should check out one of the advertisers- like ABC NIssan- on this site.

YOu'll get a wholesale price as long as you let them know you're a N4Wian. Takes a day or so to get the parts quote back, but you should save some bucks over what local dealers want to charge you. And you won't have to drive anywhere. Including shipping costs, I've saved at least 20% on my orders compared to local dealers.

EGR problem- check for exhaust leaks( cracked manifold/bad/leaky EXhst gaskets).

EGR troubleshooting is about 15 pages worth in my FSM. Cracked manifolds is a common problem and one of the culprits for the code you're throwing, so I'd look at that first.

Thanks hillbille:

I was just looking at the oem rebuild kit for the caliper. I guess this happens often for them to have a rebuild kit. As for the P0400 I did have a cracked right manifold from a tough truck contest i was dumb&drunk enough to be in, but won. I'll try to unplug that battery for a while to remove the code and drive it around some more to verify the code does not come back. Thanks again.

All manf's have rebuild kits- don't think Nissan is any different.

You got any funny ticking noises- not lifter related- when you first start up but then goes away after a few minutes warm up? It could be caused by a cracked mani. MIght want to peer under the heatshields for a visual after trying the ECU reset( and if it still throws a code 40).

I replaced the exhaust manifold and exhaust gasket between catalytic convertor and rear o2 sensor pipe leading to muffler. The P0400 is gone now. Thanks guys.
