I hate to say it cuz i'm not a big fan of TBI, but why not go with this most basic of electrictronic fuel injection? Then you'd have no problems with altitude changes, leaning the truck sideways, climbing or descending. Although it is a lot of work to do the swap.

I would go with fuel injection and love it. But it is about a $1400 mod. For that I could get a lot of cool stuff for the truck.
The sig picture will be updated shortly (thanks to orange4ska for hosting it). My buddy just got a digital camera! Jason 69' Patrol 3 speed, I-6 Custom Safari Top Custom 3" Lift 32" X 9.50 Super Swampers Superlift Shocks |

you could do fuel injection for way less than $1200 if you junkyard it! Of particular interest may be the early GM TBI efi setups, they're pretty portable, the hardest part would be adapting a distributor to the patrols engine, but far from impossible!

Interesting concept. The dist, I have come up with a method for using a GM HEI dist. from the mid 70's to early eighties.
Now I have thought about using an injection system from a early eighties four banger chevy citation. It is a very simple fuel injection system. Any thoughts? Jason 69' Patrol 3 speed, I-6 Custom Safari Top Custom 3" Lift 32" X 9.50 Super Swampers Superlift Shocks |

if you can get a 70s HEI distributor to work, you could get the remote coil computer controlled distributor off the same 4 cylinder to work, then you have ECU controlled timing as well. That 4 banger citation would be the perfect donor vehicle, although I would try and go with a mid-late 80's 4 banger s10 or car, there were significantly improvements in the ECU logic. All of those early GM ecu's were programmable with an eprom replacement, and an editor / image creator is available online for free, so you can program the ECU with only an eprom burner. The sensors on the 80s ones are pretty simple too, the TPS and MAP sensors are part of the throttle body, then you have a coolant sensor in the head, it picks up RPM from the distributor, and the o2 in the exhaust of course. Thats pretty much it for sensors on GM TBI

Absolutely. If the project runs through the end of summer, I should be down Phoenix way in the fall, permanently. I believe I met you during azrun, I was the canadian riding with datz510 all week. I was also responsible for mod-of-the-year 4link bbq. Theres TONS of great info on EFI in general, and specifically GM efi on www.diy-efi.org, check the gm_ecm site in particular. Thats where I've found most of my information on the TBI systems.

I wasn't aware it was a 6 cylinder. In that case, the best setup to use would either be off a 2.8 or 4.3 v6 s10/s15/blazer/jimmy. The distributor is setup for an even fire 6 (which the i6 is). Also the throttle bodies on these are 2 barrel instead of the 4 cyl's 1bbl setup. I would probably go with the 4.3 personally, although the two are mostly similar. Things to consider: GM TBI's use a weird fuel pressure, 15-20psi, which means a pump, and a funny regulator, although they are not expensive. The distributor conversion which would be fun. Also, these EFI systems take into account the automatic tranny, so a donor vehicle which was manual tranny would be the easiest way to go. (It's only an eprom difference between auto and manual though).
