I dont know about the HEI coil.. I was talking about the HEI module itself. Its tiny and usually can be mounted anywhere. Basically an electronic ignition system controller.

I would just look into fitting an optical unit in the distributor. That might be the easiest way. Any machinist with a lathe could make an adapter for you in a few minutes to mate an optical unit to the distributor shaft if it doesnt fit right on.

I wish i had a patrol distributor laying around.. I could work on trying to find a solution. I've got a spare working 300zx distributor that has an optical setup in it. Something like this could mabye be adapted to work on your truck. Shave the outer ring of holes off the disc and it then might be small enough to fit inside the patrol distributor.

Would an L-series engine distributor work in a Patrol engine?

I don't know if this helps - it's got the condensor on the inside and it's bad quality. I grabbed it from the PDF:

Fudd,

I posted a response on the NM board to someone who asked about this application. I know it can be done because I saw a Patrol this weekend with the GM dist on it! Turns out the dist shaft are the same on both vehicles all you need to do is swap the drive gears (small pin on that can be slid out) and you will need to file down the GM bottom part of the dist shaft so that it will fit smoothly into the oil pump drive gear. I plan on taking some photos when I go back this weekend. I wanted to look closely at the electrical hook ups too.
