This is a gloating post, so sorry.

My Patrol fires up better than any car I have ever owned. Instant fire! All of you Patrol drivers dump those points, go with Fudd's conversion for ease or scrap around like I did, but do this upgrade!

Isn't the ZX ignition great?? Thats what I noticed about my old 78 280z as soon as I swapped that ZX distributor in.. INSTANT fire.. The idle also improved considerably.

Right on, smooth idle too! I will adjust my plugs tomorrow so I even expect better results.

Sounds good to me. I would buy Ian's cap thingy, but Im a Do-It-Yourself-ER. Plus, I really dont have the money to spare since Christmas is coming around the corner. I can get the 280Z dizzy for $20, maybe?

I dont know much about the old Z cars, but is there a difference between a 280Z and 280ZX?

nice Jason! Looking forward to trying my conversion out. With the Weber, chrome 6-1 header I am getting and the kit it should be awesome, plus my distro is new. I know the kit I can get works in the Hitachi non water protect but won't know on W/P untill I get the kit.

Ian, you gonna put it on a dyno or something so we can see just how much of a power increase you got out of those mods?

Jon.. you have to use the 280zx dist.. the 280z dist uses a seperate ignition brain box.. The ZX dist has a built in electronic ignition system.

Actually Jon I am not going to dyno it....the 64 is sold so remaining work being done to it is being done by me as I am not shelling out any more cash on this truck.

The next project, besides the 66, I will do a dyno on. I want to know also what kinda of power increases are coming from the mods to the stock set up. Basically the Weber is supposed to be a 7% hp increase. I estimate with the header and eletronic ignition it is up in the 20% range. That is about a 25-30hp increase and should be very noticable. The header generally use a 2" or 2 1/2" exhaust. The 6-1 or 6-2-1 is about the same for performance. I have one header sold and getting one for myself. Will also have a third around as I am buying them in 3's at this time. Mine is going to be chrome and should look real sharp too. From what I understand you will loose a bit of low end torque from the header but she rev's real nice up to 4000rpm's and is a bit more off the line so to speak. As with everything Patrol patients is a virtue so in time all this will be on my website with detail info and pics. I have not been doing the webby so that is bit out of my hands atm. It is coming though and will be x-tra cool. Everyone from every where of course will be welcome there...

I am buying a 1983 MQ Patrol in SoCal. Less he sold it but he had not few days ago. Will more than likely pick it up around X-mas. If it runs good I may just motor it on down to AZ run 4! Or at least MOAB as I am needing some good wheelin and we are snowed in! Not to mention when you work this much on trucks you really start to get the urge to show them off and test them against other rigs. I am pretty excited about the 83 as it has the SD33, 4spd and C200's that ARB lockers drop into. Not to mention I can lift it real easy. Right now I am trying to decide if I want to use the parts in it for a build up, I have a frame ready to go and can get a brand new body for the project. The MQ or MK bodies style is a bit ugly to me and loos to much like a Bronco. But I supose with some work the body could be made to look better. It is a cool color, green and the body looks pretty darn clean. The removable rear hard top is kinda cool also. It basically just like Bart's who posts here from time to time. I should be able to put a turbo on the SD33 and make it one hell of a puller. Or Marks still has adaptors for this truck and I could convert it to some big HP. So hard to decide atm. I also found some C303 diffs for a real good price. This is also coming my way, just can't afford them still. I am really starting to think about building the 64 rag top instead of making it stock. I doubt I will as it just to rare and worth to much stock. Sure would make a sweet mod Patrol though and I got some killer ideas for it. Suppose I should just located a rag top body for the ideas... Roll Eyes

Sorry to hijack your thread Jason, just didn't really feel like posting a new one. And well my blahin' is typical right!? Late now...time to go back to bed as I got to go to SLC tomorrow to pick up a lift kit. Big Grin

Have you heard about Jet_hot, Fudd?
Their "sterling" coating will last much longer than chrome , and reduce underhood temps as well.
The coating also helps to promote scavenging in the headers so a small power gain over uncoated headers is the norm.
I'd save the cost of chroming and get the headers in mild steel then ship them off the Jet-Hot for coating( it's inside as well as outside).

I know all aobut jet hot coating. At one time in my life (don't tell anyone this) I raced imports I.E. Honda prelude. Well we did alot of things to that car including addid a T3/T4 turbo, first time around we just wraped the custom exhuast manifold/header in that wrap stuff you get from JEGS, worked real good actually better then the Jet Hot for lower the ambient air tempature under the hood just looked like crap. Then I sent it out to be Jet Hot coated came back looking major BLING BLING Smile but after a couple of runs stuff turned colors which was kind of cool looking. Then the next couple of runs stuff started bubbling off, talked to Jet Hot about and the said since it was a CUSTOM one off piece they won't cover it. WILL NEVER DUE BUSINESS WITH THE AGAIN.

Sacto_Patrol,

It sure sounds like you got worked by that Jet Hot. I would not do business with them either. However, I imagine if they are as good as the chart above said, then there are other companies that have done the same thing.

Jet hot is good stuff. I am willing to bet that the problem was the wrap you had on the header to start with. I wrapped a custom header on my 510 and after about 6 months of use, it disintegrated. A 4" section of the header literally vaporized leaving the wrap intact around where it used to be.. It is known that header wrap causes the metal to become brittle and start to chip away... it eventually flakes apart. This would probably affect the ability of the ceramic coating to adhere to the metal.

I've done a LOT of work with jethot coated parts.. It is not cheap, but the metal must be in good shape for it to work properly. Jet Hot is GOOD stuff when done right. My dad did most of his 280zxt engine bay with Jet Hot.. had everyything sent out and coated. ALl the intercooler piping, valve cover, the fuel rail, and other parts are coated as well. It works so well that the intercooler piping straight off the turbo is barely warm to the touch.

Was it the "sterling"? That's only good up to 1300 F.
Probably should have opted for the non-bling^2 "Jet-hot 2000".
Your turbo engine made too much heat.
