I don't know much about the Patrol SFAs, but I'm curious how they compare to say Toy axles or the D44. I know Nissan can make some great axles, like the H233B. I also know there are ARBs for the olders Patrols, I'm thinking of doing a dual transfer case setup when I go solid, and if I could keep the truck 100% Nissan, that would be a big bonus for me. I know parts will be more pricey for the old Patrol axles, so I don't know if it would be ecomonically the smart choice. But its a nice idea I'd like to explore.

well...I have heard the axle is the weakest part of a 60 series Patrol. Bring a wheel off the ground, spin em', bring it back down and SNAP! That is what I have heard anyways....I personally have not seen the weakness. I even jumped a Patrol once and it held tuff. The diffs both front and rear run 4.10. You will not get a locker in the 60 series diffs. A "H" modle heavy duty diff you can put in a Detroit locker but good luck finding one, I have been looking for awhile. Parts and so on for a heavy duty rear end will be a pain also. Although this heavy duty rear end was also found in the Nissan Junior pick-ups so possibly that could be the way for parts. I would think a newer Patrol axle would be your best bet and you can get all kinds of things for them including lockers. Transfer and tranny might be best from a newer Patrols also as tons of stuff for them in OZ....

Judging by how thick the walls are on the birfields, they are pretty strong. Judging by the thickness, about the same or a little tougher than an 80's Toyota minitruck! Considering the fact that Landcruiser guys upgrade their birfields by using the ones from minitrucks, I think we could run 35's. After that, all bets are off...

You can get 34" tires on 16" rims on a stock leaf Patrol...I measured today
Of course with small lift you can get bigger... I think the front end is tuff as hell also but the axle is the weak point and you can not get a locker in it. Without a locker it will only go so far as I found today. 64 L60 Patrol *project in the works* 64 KL60 Patrol "Hogan" -67 145 HP engine -PTO Koenig winch 66 KL60 Patrol "Admiral Togo" -40K original miles -245-75R15 Cooper Discoverers on stock 15" split rims & caps |

Thanks guys, sounds like I'll have to throw in the D44 then, or if I go with the dual trannies I'll get a Toy axle.

I ran 35's on my '82 Patrol without problem. The front on the K160 is a C200 and the later models and current ones even have the H233 front and the H260 rear. I've never seen a Patrol front axle snap without being ARB'd and done some nasty stuff like fully turned and locked and then stomped the gas to it.
