Hey, I have a lead on a engine from a Patrol that is wraped in plastic and was stored inside for the last 8 years. It ran great when taken out, the guy went with a 350. Do you think this engine is still good? Anyone know how to check, or what I should look for? This guy will give it to me (and other parts from a parts Patrol) if I can get his Patrol running again. Dogwater, if you still need an engine this might be the one, you would have to check on shipping. I'm on the distributor. I'm using a 280zx with module and everything. If anyone knows about these distributors then let me know. I don't know where to hook up the module wires. BTW, the distributor seems to fit almost perfect. I just need to have a piece machined to serve a key chuck. This could be an awesome upgrade for all patrol owners. I will snap some photos next time I work on it.

Is it wrapped in plastic? Hopefully it was shot with oil before they sealed it. If not you could always spray some oil in each cylinder for a few days before attempting to start it. Most engines in junkyards have sat that long so I don't think it would be seized or anything.
Dogwater is out of town for a bit. He is picking up his 85 Toyota 4 runner from Virginia. I'll pass it along to him if he calls. If not he'll see this post in a few days.

Cool Shad.

Yeah I read his web page about how you had to pull him with the old Pathy. Sounds like a crazy adventure. But I would love to know that Dogwater was out running his Patrol all over Vermont. He must be the only one.

coolant can rust inside the block and motor and be a problem too. I have only seen it on one Patrol and it had sat 25 years.

Mine was fine, and it sat for 10 years with only some water...

if its wrapped and has been stored inside, the engine should be fine.. I'd still put some oil down the cylinders, fill the crankcase and then let it sit for a bit.. Then turn it over by hand with no plugs in it to make sure it turns over freely. Then drop it in and crank it with the starter to pressurize the oil system (unless you can turn the oil pump with a drill, like on some motors) and then try and fire it up.

I had a 510 that had sat for at least 10 years.. the block was in good shape and turned out to be a pretty healthy motor.

the oil pump runs off same gear as the distro so you may be able to pump it from the top with a dril or?? The motor has a hand crank and that may also be key to use in this situation....

Yes, the hand crank comes in handy when trying to turn the motor to a certain position, or like Ian said, prime the oil pump...

Sweet, man! smiley4
Jason, of course I'm interested and appreciate you thinking of me. I'd love to get that puppy 'Patrolling'! I'll PM you tomorrow when I can see straight.
Yeah, I've been away since friday and just got back. Drove down to Lynchburg, VA with a friend in the Volvo and drove the '85 4runner back.

No problem Dogwater, I'm from Maine originally and I just wish I had my Patrol back there to drive around. Before I moved to AZ I had never seen a Patrol in my life, and believe me I was looking for them. These things are priceless out there in the Northeast, were my friends 96 Altima is rusting out!
