I am currently in the middle of the axle swap. The FJ-40's frames are 1 whole inch wider, so you have a choice. 1. you can cut the old ones off and weld new ones on. 2. you can take a cutting torch and cut 1/2" inward on the perches for the u-bolts and move the centering pin holes inward another 1/2". Thats what I and another guy did. Worked fine for him.
The axles have the same distance WMS'es. The Patrol driveshaft flange and FJ-40 pinion flange are almost the same. The FJ-40 pinion flange has its holes 1/8" closer together, so I just drilled the holes out on both flanges to 7/16". This will make a 1/4" bolt fit in. That is the ONLY driveline mod you have to do. I used a 1970 Toyota FJ-40 rear-end, so this meant that the brake fittings were these funky little 9mm fittings that were made of inobtanium. lol The brake fittings on my Patrol were SAE fittings, so I just used the stock flexible line and wired it to the axle in a different spot, and created my own custom hard lines that run along the axles. When shopping for another rear-axle, inspect your ring and pinion gear, and check the magnetic drain plug for metal shavings. FJ-40 gears are notorious for wearing badly. Also, youve got to have the 4.10. To find out what ratio it has, count teeth. the ring gear should have 37 teeth and the pinion gear should have 9. And while youre at it, GET THAT SPRING PLATE! YOU WILL NEED IT! As far as shocks, I havent figured that part out yet... will prolly use my own funkified setup... Ive got a good friend in another town that helps me with stuff like that. He is gonna mesh my gears for me, as a matter of fact. I wasnt blessed with a rear-end or springs, so Im gonna have to use the FJ-40 rear-end and Chevy S-10 springs. I was gonna use ISUZU PUP springs, but that didnt work out. They were too short... I may still use them for a short while... until I can get my hands on the S-10 springs. I dunno at this point. Anyways, I hope this helps! I do believe his rear end was missing...heh.
I see the reason in rear end upgrades but for me keeping it Nissan is the key. I want/plan to make my 64 ragtop that just went in for resto into a L60H. All that make it an "H" is the rear end, driveline and suspension. I have the suspension on the way in 3" lift. I just can't find the rear end, need to call some places in OZ. The H rear end is rated to 1.5 ton and a Detroit locker drops right in it. I think $300-800 used over seas is very possible. Plus shipping of course... On a slightly diferent note, I have been doing a lot of digging and have found some parts sources around the world. Mostly for shocks, bushings and leafs but other stuff too. See where it leads I guess.... 64 L60 Patrol *project in the works* 64 KL60 Patrol "Hogan" -67 145 HP engine -PTO Koenig winch 66 KL60 Patrol "Admiral Togo" -40K original miles -245-75R15 Cooper Discoverers on stock 15" split rims & caps |

Not much of an improvement. Patrol ring gears are like 10", FJ-40 ring gears are like 9.5". Reason Im swapping it in is, yes, like fudd said, I have none.
Fudd- What are your plans for the stock springs in the rear? Ive been looking at S-10 springs in the rear... the big problem is, they are 2.5" wide... I need 2.75". So, I would have to have custom shims made, and that still wouldnt solve all the problems... "TSUNAMI" 1969 Nissan Patrol Chevy S-10 Springs(PUP springs were too short!) well I have found multiple options for leafs. First you can get some rearched, you could find some used ones fairly easy. I do not like this route as it does re-spring them but they still to hard. Next you couold have some custom made but will run you some cash, a lift can happen this way. Jason had his reached with a lift, I had my fronts reached to stock. Lastly, I have found 3 or more places for lift kits, they range from 1/2" in front and 1.5" in rear to 3" all around. Both in standard and HD leafs. I just bought a kit in HD leafs with cellular core shocks. It is around a 3" lift. All these kits come from OZ and have to be shipped by sea plus probily have to get custom shackles made and hangers made. Yet the OZ kits are reasonably priced and you can get part or the whole thing. I am going with Noltec bushings, HD leafs and probily the cellular shocks on my 64 ragtop. I will probily also run a KYB steering damper. With stock new rears and reached fronts on my 64 hardtop I get 11" at the diffs and 13" at the tank. Not bad for stock yet it does have 33" tires on 16" rim. With lift this will come up and then I will run some 34's...should put diff over 13" off deck. For a last ditch effort you could try to order new leafs from Nissan, I got rears from them but ran me $600 a set and that is just the springs! Still waiting on fronts...the rears took 4 months to get. You couold adapt some thing but I would try to adapt the stock suspension in one of these options to the FJ40 rear end. Seems easiest to me....

M-3? Not sure I know what youre talking about... There are 2 old Willys Flat-Fenders sitting at a place on the way to the salvage yard. Im headed there, anyways. I suppose I could measure while Im at it.
Went salvage yardin and found some good springs. Off of a 76 Chevy K-10. 52" long, and doesnt have much of an arch to it, so that will work out really good. Biggest issue is the Chevy K-10 springs are 2.5" wide. Not sure of the bolt size, but the head was like 13/16". Prolly gonna be close enough that I can get custom shims made. I will be removing them tomarrow... "TSUNAMI" 1969 Nissan Patrol Chevy S-10 Springs(PUP springs were too short!) This may help you guys with fitting different springs. These links show a suspension chart for the Patrol, TLC and others...this is for a lift kit set up and not stock but a lift will still be stock leaf width. Mostly camber and number of leaves is the difference. Also is a link to a mm to inch conversion

Thanks Fudd! I think Im gonna try the Chevy springs. Only difference is the width. Lucky me, the bolts look to be the same size. Might be a bit smaller in diameter, but I can fix that.

Have you guys looked in to the 2wd B2300 mazda leaf packs? I know alot of toyota guys use them in custom leaf build ups and they are a little shorter than the chevy 63" 1/2 ton springs.

Im planning on using 73-87 1/2 ton springs. They are 52", just like the Patrol rear springs.
