Well since my old distributor was such crap I could never get my Patrol to start on the hand crank. But today, my battery was nearly dead, so I gave it a try. It worked so easily. This campus cop saw me do it and stopped by to admire the mighty PAT! He was impressed so I asked him never to give me a ticket if I get caught coasting a stop sign. No syncro in first is pain sometimes. Big Grin

What gap are you running? My friend told me to go to .45, but I think it ran better when it was at .40...

I noticed mine hand crank starts so much easier now too! When I had the stock distributor advanced so far just to get it run halfway decent, the hand crank would nearly break my wrist any time I tried to use it.

I cant happily say that Ive had that problem lately! Big Grin

EDIT: OH YEAH, no synchro in first sucks! Roll Eyes

Yeah, I took DR's advice. I'm at .40: .45 is a little too steep. I was shock how easy my Pat fired up with the crank. I was not able to start it with the crank before the mod at all. And I REALLY tried. I was so shocked I nearly passed out when it started. I was not even going to try to start it when my battery died, bit I thought what the hell go for it! Yeah I agree, I want 1st gear syncro and how about 4th too!

I think Im gonna change my gap back to .40 again. I agree... .45 seems just a bit too steep. My Patrol seemed to have ran better and started easier at .40. Oh well... maybe that will give me something to do at Tech School...

I had to have one of my friends make a bumper mount for mine. I did manage to hand crank it once with the stock dizzy and no bumper mount. Now THAT shocked the hell out of me!

I would love to have a 5-speed, but it would be WAY too hard to even make the rear driveshaft angle work. It would be fine for a Patrol tray-back or atleast a MWB, but I think the only other tranny we could work with would be one of those SM420's. Theyre only supposed to be like 12" long total...

I can only dream of a day when my Patrol would have a granny gear and overdrive... Roll Eyes

Hey...explain to the dummy(not me, I swear) how a synchro works. Does a Jeep T-5 have one?

that is pretty cool Jason......if you think about it though this is how a Patrol should be and is meant to be. A decent running P engine has to be able to start with the hand crank. What would you do in the same situation only 400 miles from nowhere in the outback!?

Synchro-Mesh is little brass clutches between the gears that gets the 2 gears moving around the same speed so shifting involves a whole lot less grinding.

A Jeep T-5 would have it in all gears.
