1. Someone told me there is a grease fitting on the water pump? Where is it?
2. My exhaust is totally rotted and I dont like where its routed. Where is a better place to route it within the frame rails? 3. I really dont like where my battery is located. Where have yall relocated yours to? 4. When performing SOA, what are some problems I will run into? And how do I solve them? Thanks in advance! For some odd reason, the forum wont let me edit the previous message. Ive come up with yet a few more questions...
5. Ive got big rust holes on the top of both front fenders. Is there a company that makes fiberglass front fenders or fiberglass body parts for these? 6. Does the engine have sleeves? 7. Is the engine truly waterproof(ive been told so)? Project: "Diamond in the rough" 1969 Nissan Patrol Isuzu PUP rear axle and springs Custom shackles 75,000 Original Miles! |

hey man...
I don't know if I can awnser all your questions but I can awnser a few. The grease fitting on the pump is located near the top or near the flywheel, can't remember....mine would never take much grease. On a stock Patrol the exhuast exits in front of right door. There was an optional rear exhuast, I have one Patrol that has it. If you look closely at the frame you might find the mounts for the optinal rear exhuast, it exits below left rear bumper. Or just get whatever suits you and have that exhuast mounted. I do not know what you mean by SOA. The big holes in your fenders are from Nissans crappy design to mount the outside mirrors on the fenders. With all the debris thrown up there any holes will rot out sooner or later. You got a few options...try to find 69 fenders that are fairly clean or have yours welded up. I am not aware of fiberglass fenders made for the Patrol. I have been told that in S.America body panels are still made for the Patrol and are steel plus cheap. Yet you need to speak spanish fluently to buy them. I know of one place in OZ that sells a few fiberglass body panels but only fender flares and grill...plus a hood. Shipping will kill you and has to come by sea. The engine is water proof only to 40 inches and that is only if you have the deep fording kit. This was a waterproof distributor, plug wires and special seals on tranny, transfer, diffs. With a custom snorkel you can ford deeper but always unhook the fan belt if fording deep for more than just a sec.... |

The water pump is at the back of the engine!? WHOA!
My exhaust has been routed from under the hood, under the right side floor board outside the frame rail with a muffler hooked up there, the exhaust goes all the way back until past the doors, then it goes over the right frame rail, goes across the chassis, over the left frame rail, and exits where the exhaust would be pouring on the axle. This might be after-market, I dunno, its rusted BADLY! Ill prolly just let it exit behind the wheel. It would be much cheaper. Ya know, even with almost no exhaust left, it is still pretty quiet. I think I will just skip out on the muffler... SOA= Spring Over Axle I suppose I will call around tomarrow and see if I cant find somebody with the equipment used for sheet metal fabrication. Thank you Fudd for answering what you could. I appreciate that very much! Project: "Diamond in the rough" 1969 Nissan Patrol Isuzu PUP rear axle and springs Custom shackles 75,000 Original Miles! |

the water pump is located at the front of the engine, right behind the fan. It is bolted to the front of the head....
No advice on SOA, I am just doing a lift the old fashion way Just get a new exhuast system made and do not worry about it. and of course no problem...the info is my pleasure! |

Yeah but it's an L60, not a G60. '66 I think with a 302, Dana44 and Ford 9".

What size tires is he running? Is the D44 on the front? Is he using regular U-joints or DBL Cardan joints? Thanks guys!

Hey guys.. jsut got back from camping up north.
You are right.. my patrol has a 302, C6, NP205, and has a D44 front and Ford 9" rear.. both are from an early Ford bronco with drum brakes all around and 4.11:1 gearing. The front is using normal U joints due to the long front driveshaft. The rear is using a CV joint w/ slip yoke eliminator for the NP205 transfercase that is in it. The tires are 36x12.5 on 15x7 wheels.. but I'm gonna order some custom made wheels to get a little more offset and a wider track. The rear doesnt have much room between the tires and the inner fender of the bed. SOAs are actually pretty easy to do if you can weld and grind your own stuff. There are a lot of resources online on how to do them. Most 4wd shops sell spring pads/perches that you can just weld in place wherever you need them. If you are going to replace the whole drivetrain, plan on a slip yoke eliminator, splined extension, and CV joint for the rear driveshaft, since it will be very short. On mine, the front really could use a CV joint or high angle U joints as well. Hardest part of an SOA is the steering linkage. You will need a hi-steer setup if you want it to be driveable. One negative aspect of an SOA on a Patrol is the short wheelbase.. 5"+ of lift on a 90" wheelbase can get a little scary on the road. I'm really not sure how much total lift my Patrol has.. but the bottom of the doors/rockers are 31" off the ground to give you an idea. Thanks John! That sure is a nice truck...
While building a custom rear driveshaft, I think Im going to use a double cardan joint. I was looking at my steering knuckles today and noticed that theyre flat top! Being a former Full Size Jeep guy, I know that just like the flat top Dana 44, a custom steering arm can be bolted onto the top and the high steering issues could easily be solved... All it would take is a little bit of machine work... Anyways, what is the absolute biggest tires that can be fit on the front of a stock patrol? The PUP springs is going to give me 2 or so inches of lift in the rear, so it should match the front fender pretty well... Also, fender trimming is not out of the question for me, Ill do it to fit some good sized tires... I think Ill rebuild my front springs. Ill leave the main leaf untouched, but Ill bolt some arched Chevy leafs to it. That ought to help a bit...
