Jason, it sounds like your choke isnt opening up all the way. Try loosening the screw that attatches to the cable, and opening the choke all the way, then with the choke knob about 1/4" out, tighten it up. That should do it.

The choke cable flexes too much, and alot of the time, the choke butterfly valve doesnt open back up all the way. You might even need to replace the choke cable.

However, it does sound like your choke, as mine used to do the same thing.

Jon4x4,

No I don't think it is the choke. The butterfly opens right up. I had the air filter off when trying to work with it. I imagine I just need to rebuild the grubby carb again. Sounds like the power valve is acting up, who knows. I'm just kind of sick with the stupid thing. I will continue to expore the idea of EFI. If it works I'll take a million questions and get out to all of you. If it fails, I'll buy the carb that Fudd went with for his Hogan Patrol. EFI, Headers, Mas air flow hooked up to a snorkel-- Sounds good to me! smiley4

I might be able to find a spare manifold. I could make a run out to the grampy's house with pile of patrol parts. I don't remember seeing one, but I never expressed an interest in one before either. I really think they are iron. If not I would be shocked! Maybe Fudd or Jon4x4 can confirm this. I do believe that I have an extra gasket for the carb to manifold mounting surface, was that what you were wondering about, would that help to bring?

OK, right. Well I imagine it is still very possible. We can talk more about the details this weekend.

I knew a guy on the Full Size Jeep forum that used to use old holley carburetor bodies, cut them open to turn them into a TBI throttle body.

Why cant we do the same with our old Rochesters?

Im sorry, but Im no Fuel Injection expert... lol I just know how to fix my TBI S-10 when its sick... thats about it...

That would be interesting. Reusing the Rochester might help. But I guess John Datz might have the best guess for that. I would love to gut that carb out. True justice for the weak carb! smiley17

Im thinking the 1bbl TBI off of an old GM 151cid(2.5L, Iron Duke, Tech 4) might be able to be adapted to work. It seems to me like that would be the closest fit.

As far as the popping, I think Ive got it figured out. Our old Rochester 1bbl's have leather-sealed accelerator pumps. When I rebuilt my carburetor, I wasnt able to get a new accelerator pump. I tried to pull the rubber off of the non-fitting one included in the rebuild kit, and make that work. Obviously, it didnt.

Im thinking that would most likely be our problem. Really, thats the only beef I have with my Rochester carb.
