It can't be getting oil in the exhaust without it getting by the exhaust valves....

black spots on the snow usually isn't oil, but rather condensation picking up carbon deposits. I've had a LOT of cars that leave big black patches in the snow. Either the truck has run rich for a long time, or it was burning oil before, and either one leads to lods of carbon buildup in the exhaust

now I am more confused than ever...just kidding!

It could be carbon but smells a lot like oil. It is also a bit greasy to the touch. Here is what I got...condensation in my valve cover that seems like way to much, whitish foam on the oil filler cap, 2 out of 6 plugs fouled with oil deposits, black oily crud blowing out the exhaust, large quanities of oil missing due to blow by or seriously buring it. I didn't mention it but the whole exhaust and muffler are new as of late October.

Now if it is not rings then it is in the head and they messed it up and should fix it for free. If it is rings then the bottom end needs a rebuild. If this is the case I am going to add oil, change plugs and drive it untill I can afford a better motor and trans.

well...it is a done deal now, the truck is sold! I was going to test compression last night again with the oil trick but ran out of time. Today it was bid up to my reserve on ebay so it is sold. I will take it to the machine shop Monday or Tuesday to make them fix the motor issue, I also have an electronic ignition conversion for it so this will be put on for the new owner. I have to have the exhaust pipe relocated also as it rubs on my front driveline under flex since the lift....no biggie and they should do it for free.

That is it...I will miss Hogan but he had to go. $7500 is OK with me considering the trucks condition and all the cash I have in it. I have well over the $7500 so I don't feel bad and I will make it right before they get the truck.

Thanks people for giving me the advice on how to trouble shoot it, I am sure I will get a chance to test the ideas on another truck. Wink

Hogan on ebay

Check it out...I had over 3000 views!! Big Grin

well....the bummer DR is that you will not get to see the 64 Patrol in person...but thanks for the congrats!

I just talked to the machine shop. I spoke with the guy who did the work. He said it is not in the valves but in the oil rings on the pistons. That makes sense...he also said compression is good on the motor, best was at 130-140 and worst was at 115-120. He also said the piston chambers looked good with next to no wear and they wear nice and smooth. So looks like a ring job...I am just going to make it right and then that is it, truck is going to SF.

It is going to be a long road trip in a few weeks...will be trailering the truck out to SF to drop it off. Then will drive down to the LA area to pick up the 83 MQ Patrol and haul it back home through Vegas. Roll Eyes

The 83 MQ is LHD! Big Grin It is emeral green in color and has a white top. I am pretty excited about it myself. $1500 is cheap IMO...I have no idea how many MK/MQ Patrols are in the USA but it is not to many. Will have to drop a grand on the injector pump but otherwise he says it is solid. After the pump I plan to do ARB lockers front and rear and a snorkel. Would like to bring it down to AZrun but doubt I will have it ready by then and it will make me broker than I already am. maybe GoneMoab if I get lucky. Don't have any pictures of it on the web or I would post them....

Well...this will be near the last batch of pictures I ever post of this 64 again. Roll Eyes

It will be with the new owner in few days in SF. What do you guys think...could it have done all the trails on AZRun?? I know, I know the tank would eat rocks...I got a skid for the tranny though. Suppose it would need a few sliders and a front end skid. You might be suprised what this thing will do with no lockers and me behind the wheel! No worries, by next year I just may have a better one with lockers, and all that jazz....would have been fun to make the runt his year. Chug

Looks like you're having too much fun. It would have done the run, but you're right - that tank would be getting nailed repeatedly.

I agree on the tank vulnerability issue. Mine gets nailed by rocks all the time, and its stock! I will be building a tougher skid plate for mine this summer! I ought to take some pics of mine after my latest adventure down into a creek bottom... OUCH!

That MQ Patrol is gonna be mean! Cant wait!
