It is a guy in Bristol CA, the New Mexico board is where I saw it. It cost $2500 from a company in Australia. However they won't make any more, maybe if we order 10 all together. I'm in if you are. Maybe we can get Fudd to get one too. I have the website of the company at my home computer, I'll post the site later. By the way, the company uses the gears from those big nissan trucks so it should be super strong. I spoke with the guy in Bristol and he loves the tranny. He said it is the best upgrade ever for his Patrol.

a 5spd from what!? It mounts to...the stock engine? This just an adapter plate or the whole deal?

I sorta have my 64 KL planned if I go to other than stock...a 5spd or at least 4spd is in the plan.

This 5 speed conversion bolts right up to the factory transfer case and engine and uses Nissan parts! Super sweet. The company has the cast mold for the tranny but the just simply discontinued production. I'm quite sure it was these guys that built the tranny to begin with.

sorry guys but you are wrong....

Richard,

We were recently discussing on a USA Patrol board tranny options.
Several people mention that you used to make a 5 speed that bolts
right in the 60 series Patrol. I guess one guy in California has one
and really loves it. It was said that you still have the box but no
longer make the guts. I heard a price of $2500 for a bolt in unit.
Some of us are wondering how many it would take to get you to
remake
them? Would an order of ten be enough to get ten units made and
sent
to the USA? Just curious and some people wanted me to ask you....

Regards,
Ian

Hello Ian,
Sorry but you have been misinformed. We have never made
gearboxes and I am sorry but I have not heard of this particular box.
Kind Regards

You must be thinking of Marks4wd Adaptors. He did most all of the 60 series adaptors. He is kinda of an anal guy torwards us USA Patrol owners from what I gathered. He doesn't even list 60 series stuff on his webby anymore and last I heard he is 100% done with the old Patrol.

Well if this guy is done, perhaps we can convince this guy to sell us the molds and part numbers. I wonder if I can get more information from the CA guy. I'll shoot him an email about it.

This is the email Gary from CA sent me, he brings up some good points about a Chevy tranny and a way to get rid of the oil bath filter:

Jason,
Sorry but I think I got the last of the 5 speed conversions. The trans came from Marks 4x4 in Australia. They were taking a the gears from a large Nissan truck and putting them in a case that they had made to fit the Patrol. It was distributed by Advanced Adapters in California. Several Patrol club members have tried to get the trans but Marks says that their not making them any more. To bad, it was worth the $2600 that I had to pay for it. The club had 5-6 members commit to buying a trans each but Marks wasn't interested. I think that there might be a chance it they got the numbers up to 10 or 12 or more they may reconcider. Talk to Marks and I'll bet you could get a crowd from the club that would sign up for them. You may need to put the money up front. They should have the case molds and the know how etc. Marks also makes an adapter that bolts a Ford engine to the Patrol trans. I thought, cool, I''ll put a 300cid Ford 6 in my Patrol. Wrong, the adapter is only for Australian Ford engines.
The only other thing that I could think of is that it's common knowledge that a 292 straight 6 Chevy engine bolts to the Patrol tranny with a spacer, Seems to me that the transmission for a 292 Chevy should bolt to the Patrol engine with some modification. I'd like to get the bolt pattern from the Patrol engine and go to a junk yard to see if this is true.
Look back in the 2-4 year old Patrol Club Message Board entries under my name and I wrote what I did to convert. Basically I just dumped the oil side of the air cleaner but kept the top, carb to air cleaner goose neck portion. I ran a piece of 1/4 inch threaded stock up from the old air cleaner manifold mount to the hold in the top of the remaining piece of the original air cleaner. Then I went to a auot parts store with that old top part and found the air filter that fit the best. Next I went to a junk yord and took the top flat pan off of an old Toyota or Ford pickup air cleaner that happend to fit the other side of the of my filter. Now I put the original Patrol air cleaner piece back on the carb and put the filter on the old oil side. The Toyota/Ford air cleaner went under the filter and the 1/4" theaded stock held it all together witj a wing nut and a couple of nuts to support the filter. Now a paper filter is sitting in place of the old oil pot. Look at the second picture of my Patrol, I think there is a pictur of it. I wrapped the paper filter with some K&N bulk foam (red in the picture)
Hope this helps some. Don't hesitate to contact me again.
Gary
PS: I have since replaced the Carb with a Weber two throat that came with it's own air filter.

I wonder what weber he but on ?

Thanks for emailing him and finding some more info.

The problem I see then is getting the T-case to bolt up to the Chevy transmission

good info Jason! I really like the stuff about the air filter as I am trying to get a non-oil bath on my64.Seemswhen I wheel on exterme angles or off camber it spits oil out and then gets splashed everywhere. And nope it is not to full....I want air filter not oil bath on this one! Also inerested in the Weber carb as a Weber is what I was thinking of adapting....can you get more info on the card? Pictures of it all including the tranny would be pretty sweet too....

I was thinking about this today while working on the 64 and basjing my knuckles! Now think about it, even if Mark wants to make 10 5spd's it will be harder to come up with 10 Patrol owners to front $2500. Not to mention the year wait while Mark makes us 10 trannies. I think you may have a bit of a hard time convincing Mark from this side of the planet also. $25k he may make off one build up. Now what if we just had him make us the case. He uses his mold and casts the box and sells it to us at a reasonable cost. Not as much effort on his part. then he sells us or better gives us the info on the gears, bearings and so forth for the box. We source the parts from Nissan or else where and build it ourselves. In my opinion this would get farther than raising $25k and convincing an Aussie to make us a 5spd.

I agree Fudd. Another option is to forget Mark all together and see if the folks at advanced adapters or a shop like that will just build them too.

I want an adapter to fit a 4-speed T-90 like on my friend's M715. 1st gear is like 4.something!!! OHH MAKE ME DROOL!!!

But if its a 5-speed you want, the 5-speed found on the Chevy S-10's would be the one to aim for. Ive seen big blocks bolted up to them with no problems. The best thing is, theyre dirt cheap!
