This is the 83 MQ I am buying for $1500
It needs a new injection pump and is the non-turbo SD33. The tranny/transfer was replaced with good used ones not long ago. It should have the C200 in front and the H233 in rear for diffs. I priced the injection pump, about $1100. I also priced a turbo, price is about $2000 and it will require changing the pistons, bummer. The SD33 in it was rebuilt but because of the injection pump it runs like crap. So I am now heavily considering buying the RD28 or similar on ebay. The RD28 is a pretty sweet Nissan diesel motor even if a touch on the small side. It has more torque than the SD33 by far. I priced shipping to me from Florida for the RD28. It works out to about $2k for the motor and shipping, with the 5spd trans. I might have to locate a trasfer case as the one on the MQ now may not bolt to the 5spd. Might also have to replace the rear diff as I am pretty sure the 5spd with transfer will require a center pumpkin diff in the rear, I am kinda hoping not. Any ways, first thing to do is decide on the motor. I could sell the SD33 for at least $500 I think also, with 4spd for more. Here is my list of stuff to do to it ASAP. -motor work $2000 don't want to spend much more than this, I am thinking RD28 or TB42 -lift kit 3-4", FREE, a demo kit from Direct Suspensions -rims (16") and tires 33-34", no wider than 10", $1500 -New bucket seats with 4-point harness $500-800 -roll bar, $500 -Safari snorkel, $150 -Warn 8275-50 Winch $1000 -RockHopper transfer mod, $900 if I used the 5spd -3 core radiator $450 -new fender flares, $250-400 -ARB locker $1200 front and rear -bumpers and sliders, $500 -custom tire carrier, $250 There is more to do to the truck...ugh looks like I am buying a project that can easily turn into a money pit! Any ways, thought I would post a pic of the truck and my plans with it.... |

well...it looks like there was variety of diffs in the rear, also the front depending on what year Patrol we are talking about and what country. I got 3 different info sheets and they all show different diffs for all years. In the MQ it shows C200, H260 and H233. Plus two guys in different places in the world say different things about how the 1980's & 1990's Patrols are outfitted. Regardless lockers are available for them all so this is what is important to me. I need books on Patrols from 1980-2004, this I am lacking and right now I must say it is confusing.
Tell ya what Jason, if I swap out the motor you can buy the SD33, maybe with the 4spd also. Little bit of welding on your frame and it should go in easy, size wise it is no problem. I am also pretty sure the tranny/transfer is offset and would work good in a 60 series. BTW, good to see ya back around on the board...you been away awhile. |

The SD33 I would have to think about that. I'm still not sure if I should just steal John's power train!
Keep me posted. On your engine swap. So when does the "new" Patrol arrive? |

Yeah, but BART hasn't been over here much lately. He is on AC from time to time. I know he just got back from galavanting all over Africa, the lucky dog!

I know who Bart is...I also know what his P-troll looked like. This 83 is MINE though!
If yu guys know Bart then go tell him to drop by the forum more often. He never posts here anymore. I know he is much more knowlegable than me on 1980+ Patrols. We don't have them here so it is uncharted territory and I am just begining to educate myself on the 4 main models since the 60 series. Also I have just about made my decision on the motor for the 83 MQ. I am 70% sure I am going to buy and use the RD28 and 5spd. Jason, new Patrol shuld be in muy shop in no more than 3 weeks. The 64 KL60 "Hogan" is being prepped for the buyer now. In about 2 weeks I trailer it out to San Fran, get my money and head for SoCal to get the MQ. Gonna hit Vegas and see a friend on the way home. Should be sweet...I need a road trip! Also Jason...drop on by my website and join in the forum, the more P-troll owners who use the forum the better. That 5spd tranny you wanted...well it may be happening, or the choice of a 4spd too. |

Fudd, I've got some photos that Bart sent me a while back of his front diff, and I was having a closer look at them today. Best I can tell, the short-side spring perch is cast into the center section and the tube goes in through it. Is that correct? Kinda puts a big damper in my idea to swap the tubes to turn one into a driver-drop...

Well...since I have not actually laid eyes on a C200 yet I can not say for sure. Yet, the C216 is very similar to the C200....on the C216, yes the spring perch is cast into the axle housing on the passenger side. The tubes are also one piece, the whole diff housing is one piece. I do not know how you would switch it to a drivers drop, figured you fab guys could figure that out.
I have had the feeling for awhile now that if going to use a Patrol front diff in your domestic Nissan it will require the use of the Patrol tranny also. Depending on what year the tranny is may also require using an offset rear diff or a center one. Since I am working with old Patrols this is no biggie because I/we want something besides the 3spd and ultimately front and rear lockers is the goal. |

I would suggest to just replace the fuelpump and keep that 3.3d. That engine may not give high numbers in horsepower or torque but i will get you anywhere and it last and last and last a long time
