The Fords with the 300cid L6 had Motorcrap carburetors on them. Look like they would bolt right up though...

What kind of gas mileage do Patrols get? Just to get an idea...

Ok you guys are starting to confuse me with the Z talk...I know nothing about the Z or 510's! 510's can rally otherwise I dunno...heh. There it is though, best I can do for pics atm but that is the engine. What can we do with it....?? I just want my 64 to be able to wheel without probs. I have money to spend....think it up and lets fix it! New carb and intake manifold...adapted electronic ignition and FI...sounds good to me! Change out the engine...nah not right now.

Someone with some decent fab skills, a spare day, and an intake gasket could probably crank out a new intake manifold for it from sheet metal. Won't be the most efficient thing in the world, but it aint a race car.

well the intake is on the driver side of a Z motor. They came in 3 displacements - L24, L26, and L28 for the 2.4, 2.6, and 2.8 liter versions respectively (hence the 240, 260, and 280Z designations. 510's used a 1600cc version - it was basically the L24 with two less cylinders.

The Z engine appears to be smaller, but it's hard to tell.

Best thing I can say is to do what Jason mentioned and find a Z to compare it with...like where the bolt holes are, etc.

Otherwise, I still like my Ford carb idea Smile

a *somewhat* cheap, but pretty easy comparison is to buy a bunch of intake manifold gaskets from different 6 cylinder cars... that'll at least get you to where something could fit. then you need to get your hands on the manifold and see where things go

I want the oil bath breather off of an early 80's ford. They have a snorkel coming off of them. Would work PERFECT for our Patrols to make a deep water fording kit!

oh yea Jason....you asked about our ability to tune our Rochester carbs. Well here is a post from a guy off the NPCA site about the carb.

[QUOTE From: Bush in response to Message 2 Sent: 7/28/2003 5:25 PM
From recent experience-- this sounds like a dirty carburetor. Make sure all the orifices are perfectly clean and open. It took three cleaning attempts on our Rochester to get it truly clean. Good luck! [/QUOTE]

So maybe this is our probs in the Rochester carb. Maybe it is doomed if it is not clean enough to eat off, inside and out! It would make sense for how mine is running...idle jumps around and doesn't want to adjust right for mixture. If I have small air leaks it would also explain why it will die especially on hills. I have checked the whole system with a spray bottle and soap and it only leaks on the seperator, even the new one! Maybe my old cork seals are just to old and stiff...need to make a nice rubber gasket...what kind of rubber is gas proof!? I would hate to clean my carb again but I am also sure some small stuff has gotten through since i rebuilt it. smiley42

any ways...more about the pos Rochester. smiley48

Fudd, why did you remove the Jeep Carter carb? Did it have an adapter plate on it? How about the throttle linkage, was that modified? Why did you not just stay with the Jeep carb? When I rebuilt my carb, I went nuts with cleaning. I would eat off it inside and out. All new gaskets too. But the idle would jump up and down when the engine was cold maybe 200 RPMs. The engine seems to bog down, it feels like the truck has 75 hp like a weak 4 banger, rather than the 6. On an earlier post people thought that my float bowl was low, there is a very noticable hesitation in the gas from idle.

Back to the carter carb, I have had good luck rebuilding that before on my CJ-7 in the past. Also, if the stock carb bolts up then there is a ton of other more reliable carbs we could buy to bolt right up.

Another one to try would be the Carter 2bbl(looks like a 1bbl) off of an old 70's Dodge Slant-6. Ive already rebuilt one of those, and its something to consider, also...

jmcallis,

The jetting may be wrong in that Rochester. Might be worth installing an O2 sensor and gauge so you can watch the mixture. Hesitation off idle could mean the idle jets (if it has them) are not correct. Also, low power would mean over-rich mixture. If it pops/backfires out of the carb, its lean. A rich mixture just tends to bog the engine down. You may want to try going a size or two down on the jets and see what happens. When I was monkeying with the Weber 32/36 DGVs on my 510, I had a whole huge box of jets, emulsion tubes, etc. They arent cheap, but are necessary to get carbs tuned right. You can always go pull them out of junk carbs at junkyards too to get different jets. One or two sizes in change can make a huge difference in driveability.. It took me quite a while to get the right jetting in that Weber.

What about fitting a TBI setup? You can buy cheap programmable EFI controllers now.

Datz510,

I would love to get a TBI setup. Without a doubt that would be my preference. How cheap? Would you or anyone else you know be able to dial it in? Do you know of any websites that sell these EFIs and give a few more details?

I will play with the jets if I have to. But if EFI was possible and not too pricey about $500 then I would do that in a heart beat.

Jason, I took off the Carter because the whole fuel system was shot. It was running horrible and so the entire system was rebuilt. I had a Rochester laying around so went to NAPA got a kit, rebuilt it and tossed it on. I did have the float wrong in the Rochester, had a mech fix that. Maybe the Carter is a better carb but the one I have needs a rebuild. My carb also seemed damn clean when I rebuilt it...even the mech said it looked real clean. Yet with all the priming and a bit of running with no filters and I could have got some small debris in the carb. I am all for changing it over to what ever on the blue 64...it is for wheeling and I want it to wheel like a champ.

On a seperate note....just made plans this AM to get my 64 ragtop in for body resto! I think we will also rebuild the engine as it needs it badly and he wants to pull it to clean up engine bay. Really looking forward to getting some work done on this rig...can't wait to see the body restored!
It probily won't be a driveable rig after this as it needs a new suspension and I do not know how the tranny/trans/diffs are. Yet the engine and body will be done by late fall or early winter. Then all I need is some new canvas and the body is done...even got a line on some stock new canvas from India for hella cheap! This 64 ragtop has no title so I will have to get it a new vin # so I can get it road legal....any ways I am excited and here is a pic of the 64 ragtop going in for body resto next week! Also the pic above of the engine that is stripped is from the 64 ragtop.

Here is what you should look into:

Megasquirt AVR - AVR Mega128 @ 16 MHz

http://caffrey.dk/megasquirt/

Its a kit based setup for DIY injection. It could be adapted to work with TBI.

http://www.student.dtu.dk/~s973396/caffrey.dk/megasquirt/hardware.shtml

Soemthing like this would not be plug and play. It would take some work to get it going properly.

I dont know why, but it slipped my mind. Here is what Ive been thinkin about...

http://cliffordperformanceshop.com/catalog/08-1610_weber_2_brl__adaptor_1711341.html

Those WEBERS can run at some pretty extreme angles. My friend had dual WEBERS on his dune buggy. He ran at some pretty extreme angles at times... At one point the dune buggy was halfway on its top and side... engine was still running... sputtering and spilling fuel, but still running!
