ok dudes...I will let you all figure out the TBI, FI stuff. I know you can get eletronic ignition on a Patrol cause I have seen pics of it done, just requires a custom shaft I think. In the meantime I am looking for a good off roading carb to rebuild and adapt. Maybe the Carter but probily not. This issue will have to be worked out sooner or later for all us Patrol owners as you can not get a stock carb and never will be able to in the future. Even if you had one you can not get reuild kits for them...I just ordered a rebuild kit from OZ for the red 66 stock carb. He told me this is the last one and no more in existance as they do not make them anymore.
On a seperate note...I have a lift kit on the way from OZ now. It is in the HD springs. I was going to go the rearching route or have some custom made but after feeling how the rearched ones ride on the blue 64 I said nah. It was good for me to put the new stock rear ones and rearched rears on the 64. You can totally feel the diffrence in ride. The rearched ones gain some heigth and ride better than they did but the new rears ride awesome. Not stiff at all in the rear and it is a world of differance. Anyways here is a pic of the engine with a eltronic igniton. Anyone reconize the ditro?? |

Thats a normal GM HEI distro, at least the body and internals will be, no idea about the shaft obviously. the cap and module and reluctor are different than a v8 HEI, but the rest of the distributor is the same. Parts are cheap, available at the parts store, and it only takes 1 wire to make it work.

I actually still have my stock carburetor. Runs pretty good... sputters for a second when you first hit the gas. But just when you first hit it. After that, it runs just fine!

Fudd,
I have seen the engine you posted and talked to the owner. You are right about the shaft mod only. But I'm quite sure the HEI is from the inline 6 that was in some Novas, trucks and vans from the eighties. The only weird thing is that the guy had to use the Nissan dist base and the HEI shaft went up through the whole factory base (now hollowed out) then he filled it with some kind on silly silicon paste. I started the Patrol and it fired right up without a choke like it was a fuel injected engine. I did not get to test drive it though because he has no front tire. hmmmnnn...I knew it looked funky on the bottem, or should I say familiar. He must have done that to extend it because it was to large in diameter to mount low next to block. I don't like the sound of the funky home made hollowed out silicone crap but I do like the sound of how it ran.
Petronix makes a lot of kits and I was wondering if they made one for an inline 6 such as newer Patrol engines or say a G-Wagon....?? That would seem like the easiest to adapt or Nissan stuff. Like you say Jason if someone could find or fabricate a solution then they could sell an easy 75 kits to us owners. I thought the same thing with fabbing up replicated S/T frames. |

Jason...I got my fuel system pretty well dialed in now. Here is the deal...
For here in Jackson it is 6300' so I have the Rochester at 3/4 of a turn out on air/fuel mixture screw. Then it idles really low, barely running so adjust idle screw till it idles smooth at about 800rpm's. Make sure the breather tube is getting good air at tank. Check gas cap and it it sucks a lot of air when you open it then their is probs with the breather. Check all fuel lines from carb to tank with spray bottle and soap. Find leaks fix them...if you have old seperator check it real well as all mine leak. Seems the old cork seal just will not seal, must be cause they are old and hard. Right now I have the filters bypassed and am just pumping straight fuel from the tank. This is what I learned about the fuel system...it has to be very air tight, obviously. The eletric pumps will starve or over fill the carb and the get hot as hell so vapor locks a lot. A guy I know with one put a fuel pressure reg valve on it because it was overpumping, ie at 11psi sted of the 4-7 the carby needs. I have found the stock mechanical works awesome. If you do not have one you can get one in OZ for $200 their dollars. Tomorrow I am going to put in a high volume fuel filter inline. Then I will get some plugs to carry in the rig incase it fouls them when in BFE. I have it lean now and it is now fouling shiat so don't think it will be a prob. Last thing is timing is set at 10 out from TDC. We went and did some pretty serious stuff today. The rig performed awesome! Did not die once and held power all day. On inclines up to 50 degrees and serious off camber it kept on running. The Rochester held tuff and didn't seem to mind being at angles. I know now all my probs were in an eletric pump and leaky fuel lines sucking air. The carby still jumps around a bit in it's idle but otherwise is doing good. We hit some pretty rough stuff with no trails just brush whacking and the rig pulled through with flying colors. More than once I said "hell yea this suspension rocks!" and also I was stoked to be in a Patrol with a 16' turning radius. The Pinz would not have made it through the tight stumps we were avoiding...then again it could have drove over them! |

Fudd,
First I'm very pleased to hear that you had some success! I too have done some big work on my truck. Could you email me with your phone number? I would like to talk out in some detail about your efforts with the Rocester. Let me know when it would be good to try you this weekend. The other thing is the electric fuel pump psi, my pump is not rated for 4-7, as I recall it is rated for much less. I remember 3psi. I guess I will confirm that again. One more thing, what was it that you were saying about the gas tank cap pressure. I redid my tank vent like the cheap solution mentioned in this months four wheeler Mag by using a fuel filter at the end of a hose. I then closed off the vent line hock up on the fill hose. Finally my locking after factory gas cap is suspect. I do not at all get a hiss from the tank when I open it like some cars. Other than getting another cap, does anyone know what I should do with the vent hose? Jason 69' Patrol 3 speed, I-6 Custom Safari Top Custom 3" Lift 32" X 9.50 Super Swampers Superlift Shocks |

Jason check your pm...
I worked on the 64 a bit today then we took it out wheeling. Found a new trail that climbs about 2000' in just 2 miles! This trail is hella steep with lots of rocks and off camber stuff. Grades were from 30-60 degrees. Only 2 hills stopped the 64 today, both were soft with 4-6" of soil and rock mixed plus they both were over 50 degrees. Without lockers the old P-troll will only go so far, like 80% to the top. We hit some rough stuff though...boulder fields, brush whacking, log hopping and hill climbs. It came through will flying colors! I hit the SS tank hard on a rock today and it held strong..so for now it will work. It is a good feeling to finnaly have this rig running good. One thing that has had me wondering... does our T-Cases have a diff in them? Ya know, to allow the front and rear driveshafts to move at different speeds when in 4HI?
