These are the tires I finally decided on for my 64 trail Patrol. Staying with stock 16x6.5" rims limits choices a lot.

XZL

Talk about pizza cutters!! LOL...seriously though they look pretty sweet and after a 3-4" lift should fit nicely....36.5" tall baby!! Big Grin

Looks like a good agressive tread pattern and I like the fact they're radials.

I had those 32x9.50 swampers for a while, and now Jason is running those on his Patrol. Those were pizza cutters too.

Gotta love the advertising on that page lol

In the United States, we are accustomed to traveling first class, business class, coach, etc. But we Americans forget that the majority of the world travels in first class, second class, and roof class. For such occasions, the very high load rating of the Michelin tires really matters. These Michelin XS sand tires take these great loads in stride. While you will never load your vehicle like this, it's nice to know the Michelin tires can take it.

actually the xzl isn't that good of a tire for up here in the northeast. it fills with mud/snow/guck and doesn't clean that well. that's why i never pick those sets up just xls and xmls which are a more aggressive pattern as it is.
oh and it doesn't matter if they're radials or not. at the 36" size they're rated for trucks that are 4-5 tons at ~90 psi, so they'll wear well no matter what...

oh and if you really do stay with the xzl groove those center lugs into two pieces, they'll work better...

personally if you want to stay in a 9r16 size, which is the smallest you'll get with the michelin military issue, get a set of XLs instead

it's what is on my yota until i groove up a set of xmls i have laying around

well...intresting comments Zeeto...

I picked the XZL for several reasons....one is tire size. They fit a srock 16" Patrol rim! Not many tires will do this....and these suckers are damn tall. Once lifted my Patrol should be about where I want it hieght wise with these tires, remember I have uncut rear fenders. If I was to cut the rear fenders then plenty to choose from but I won't do it. Orginally I wanted some PJ's but can't get them for the rim. Then I looked into some Simex Trekkers from over seas...not a DOT tire plus shipping is a killer. I can't get any wider than 9.5" on my Patrols because it will not clear an uncut rear fender. Then my last consideration is that here in western Wyo we don't get much mud, only in spring and fall. Sometimes none in the fall. Most of our wheeling is on dry hard dirt, rocks, grass, sand and snow. We have a lot of hardpack dirt with sharp rocks in our local wheeling. I have ran several sets of Cooper Discoverer's for snow, with studs and without and they clean very well in the snow. The Cooper has a tighter tread pattern so if they clean why not the XZL's?? I thought about some Yoko Geolanders but heard to many mixxed reviews about them, might run them on a later project. I don't really like Interco tires and never have...so swamper and such were not an option. I actually had very few options when all things were considered.....I am sure if I don't like them a local redneck will pay me nearly the same price I payed for his Dodge or Ford 1-ton as the XZL's are hard to find and rednecks around here tend to like tall narrow tires. Hmmmnnn....does that make me a redneck also!? LOL

Suggest a better tire that will fit my rims and all my needs and I will listen...otherwise I am basically sold on the XZL'z! Yes I know about the XL's but don't really like the tread pattern so never checked if they make a size to fit my rims. Your comments about cutting a groove in the center of the XZL's is intresting and I will remmebr it....

Bottem line...any tire will wear out but not any tire will fit my needs for the 64 trail rig.

Tall and narrow=good for crappy Nissan IFS steering lol

I hate those trucks whose full width is more than twice as big as it's height...fat tires suck Big Grin

36" tall?! Wow! I didn't think you could fit something that tall, even with the spring lift. Are you having your springs rearched and aal or what? I've been trying to figure out a place to talk to about doing a spring lift on my packs.

Oh yea...here is a nice page with write ups on "hard to find" tires....I found it an intresting read!

Tires...

Heya Dogwater....Yes the 36.5" tall bad boys will be a bit tricky fitting under my Patrol. Not going to have springs rearced. About 100 miles from me is a shop thet specializes in suspensions. In paticular leafs and coils.....I put in a call to them right after Ironman dropped their kit for the USA. They said they will custom make the leafs in near any lift size I want. Only prob will be in the stearing front end stuff. I am pretty sure I can go 4" with no probs, they seemed to agree with me even though they never seen a Patrol....they want me to bring over the rig so they can take measurements and all this....then he said he can tell me exactly what he can do. They said they use CAD and can manufacture also, he sounded a bit smarter than your average red-neck around these parts! Wink I picked out the XZL's after I spoke with them. So when I take the rig over I plan on making sure these tall mo-fo's will be part of our discussion and hopefully everything will go smoothly. I took some measurements and the old school tire on my 64 is already nearly 33" tall. I checked rear fenders a lot as this is the first concern for me....I think I will have to cut or roll under the fender lip on the rear fenders. I then checked all around the front end for when the wheeel is cranked in a full turn. It all seems ok except of course with no lift these XZL's will be way the hell up in the fenders, front and rear....obviously won't fit or work without the right lift. I feel good about the whole thing except in extreme flex situations. Possibly custom bump stops could solve this....I am also wanting to talk to them about making the sway bars on the Patrol quick disconnect for serious offroading. I have read alot about how this can greatly increase flex and will also allow you to keep the sway bars for road handling. It is comman on newer Patrols in OZ. I will know for sure when I get the rig over to Idaho and have the measurements taken for the lift. They didn't price me yet but did say $850-$1200 depending on lift height is around what a basic leaf set up costs. $1500 for a bit fancier....I will have more info when I get the rig over to them in a month ot two. As with nearly everything on a Patrol you need a bit of luck and good resources but it can be done!

hehe, that's a tire i'm looking to get, and yeah shipping kills it. been trying to find a way through a few people i've talked to in oz...

you do know that these are 9.9" wide right? that .5" might make all the difference in the world. just a heads up...

that's a similar question i've had but haven't had a reason to prove it not true. i've seen larger one's perform and when i've seen it they don't clean well.

you will definately find people who will buy them. especially with the war and michelin cutting production the military is not as quick to part with them anymore

well then me and most new englanders are rednecks also. the q78 swamper is a popular size up here (35.5x10)

nope sounds like you've really done your research, and i can't think of any other pizzacutters for 16". just so you know, for future reference, all michelin x series are for 16" or 20" rims.

Your comments about cutting a groove in the center of the XZL's is intresting and I will remmeber it....

keep it in mind with any tire you buy. just because it's a certain tread design doesn't mean it has to stay that way. oh and if you want to get real creative, cut small strips (~1/16-1/32" deep by 1/4" wide) out of the sidewall going from tread to rim. it'll let the sidewalls flex a little better if you put 40-50 of them on each side. and these tires have thick sidewalls so it's not going to hurt. it's tedious, but worth it in my book.
and pm me, i have contacts with many military surplus dealers in canada.
