I'd say electric. Reason being, if your truck isn't running, PTO is not going to work.
However, when your truck is running, the PTO will be much more efficient. ----------------------------- My myspace page. TUPPERWARE!!!! "Never argue with an idiot, they will just drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." |

If you can get a PTO winch for your MQ then for sure do it!
I have one and it rocks hard. Sandbag is right though, if the truck is not running neither is the winch. But you say 3L...is that the L28 or is it the SD33 diesel? Because there really isn't much that will stop the SD33 from running. Run it out of fuel, get air in fuel system, suck water into motor or alt goes out(only a prob to start)....that is about all that stops it from running. My alt has been dead for awhile, the truck will run all day long with zero power! Not the case with the gaser motors and it would also make it so I couldn't run an electric winch. Perhaps PTO winch with a back up hand winch? Or PTO and a set up for receiver type winch, Warn makes one. A lot of your comp trucks in Asia and Europe run both a PTO and an electric winch. I dislike electric winches because I have burned up several. They are hard on your electrical system and can only be run for short periods of time before they overheat. A PTO can run continuously all day long and never have a problem. |

It's 3L which available only in ASIA (petrol engine 6cyl). I want to run this vehicle in Armenia (I will transfer it to This country In Europe with very cold weather!!!).
For PTO winch, It's porrible for me. (But not for WARN!!! 1984 Partol L28 1983 Patrol Z24 |

Depends how hard your wheeling, and how much you plan to use it. For hard core wheeling I dont think a PTO is the best thing. Just last week-end I saw 4 rigs that got winched off their sides. They could not have done it with PTO winches. However if you are using your winch for pulling down trees and other applications such as that then I would prefer the PTO.

if you are on your side or top alone you are not in a good place. Usually someone around for that type of wheeling to help you upright the truck. It can also be done with a hand winch or a high rise, true an electric works best but still other options.
If you have an L28 it can stop running a lot easier than the diesel. All you have to do is get the dizzy wet. for an electric, ya go Warn, go 8274...and if you want the best check out this... http://www.gigglepin4x4.net/8274/twinmotor.htm |

Well I could see it being fine if you are pulling yourself up slick roads or out of mud holes. 1992 Pathfinder SAS RIP 1994 pathy RIP 1982 720 RIP 1985 720 turbo diesel - Sold 1979 CJ-5 - Sold 1994 4Runner - DD for sale 1992 YJ Current project |

i vote for the elect winch. I've seen the link Fudd posted before, twin 6hp motors is just radical. Talk about a expensive set-up. You could take down a tree/house or anything els with that thing.

how long will an electric winch take to drain batts down to nothing when trucks is not running, ie no alt.??
My Pinz was 24v and so was the Warn winch. Didn't take long to drain it down iirc when the truck was not running. you think those 12hp 8274's running a big alt.? |

whenever your running a winch you should have a deep cycle battery. If your running a regular starting batt, yes your winch will not only drain the bat really fast it'll also kill the batt.
A elect winch does require a slightly upgraded charging system. I've been running a regular deep cycle/starting batt in my truck for 2 years now. Haven't had any problems yet. However I have had to do any long high stress pulls with the engine off. One day I'll upgrade the alternator. 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |

As I said before, I will drive this vehicle in Armenia, with very bad conditions & whether, So I have to keep in mind that I will need my engine for long time. My first opinion was changing the engine with SD33 or SD33T diesel engine. (keep in mind that I found this vehicle in Iran with L28 & in this country every thing is very expensive, 4 example I bougth this vehicle 8000 USD & a neww 2008 Patrol in this place will cost more than 90,000 USD- very intresting!!!
