This weekend I insatled a new Dobinsons HD lift kit on my blue 64. Yes, these are the Dobinsons kit I supply. This kit is a heavy duty pack with 8 leafs in rear and 6 in front. It was rated at 1/2" in front and 1.5" in rear but after fitting it I got 3"-3.5" all around on the truck! Big Grin I removed the sway bars but still need to remove the limiting rods. The driveline angles seem just fine and so do the new rubber brake lines. The truck sits definately stiffer but after a short test drive it handles excellent. The lack of sway bars is hardly noticable and it is not as near as stiff as I thought it would be, very comfortable ride. I now have 30" at rear corner of body, 24" on floor pan bottems, 35" above rim at fender and 37 1/8" at the front fender. The truck sits high but does not look funny or to high making it tippy...it simply looks very mean! All these pictures were taken Saturday while doing the rear...I did the front today and forgot to take my camera Frown Will get more pics of it soon with the entire kit fitted. Only prob was that the front U-bolts are to long so will have to change them out soon, other wise the kit bolteed right in with zero problems. I used Noltec bushings all around and they seem very awesome too! Here is the pictures....

Cool! The springs will likely settle some and net you a little less lift, but looks great nonetheless. Boy, that tank sure hangs down Frown

Ya know...a lot of people comment on the tank. Yet, I can tell you this...I have wheeled this truck hard and only hit it a few times lightly. Logs, ruts, steep grades are not a prolblem and this was before the truck was lifted and the tank sat lower, a lot lower. I can see that on very steep grades it will hit the ground but this P-troll has not been able to climb a grade steep enough to hit it. In a lot of other pictures I posted it looks like the tank is hitting the ground but once inspected it is not, close but not touching. I feel that in Moab or on the Rubicon it would be a problem as big rocks will definately hit it. Yet, I do not wheel those places and if I do it will be only once in a great while. So it works fine for here in Wyo...plus it is now higher than ever before! Take a look at the diff pumkin it is much lower and much more prone to get bashed than my tank IMHO. I think the only time this tank will be a problem for anyone now that the truck is lifted is dropping off a big rock or going up or down grades this truck can not climb. I guess down there in the desert it would suck as mostly rocks to play on but here it is not been a problem...I may have to prove this by showing you guys the truck performing offroad! Razz

Looks great and yeah, it'll probably settle a bit. I think you ARE going to have to prove it about the gas tank! Razz (Only because I want more action shots!)

Jon...the lift is spendy. A standar pack lift is bit cheaper but fter all the import and transpo fees I have to sell the HD lift for about $1250 and only make a small amount of money in profit. I have a few small details to iron out with the kit such as to long U-bolts in front and so far I do not think the shocks they sent will cut it with a 3+" lift. I left the Ranchos in this truck and they may even be a bit short, have to check it out still...so what I am saying is the cost may come down as I get it all dialed in and once I sell some they should drop my price so I can do they same. For a guy like you I would reccomend buying parts of the kit such as just the front springs as you need them and so forth.

I AGREE...mean machine! smiley4 I could not resist so took an hour break this after noon and took the truck out. Once again the camera was at home, I supposed to be working, hehe. Any ways, took it on drive down some good roads and it handles great! We then went down to the river, the Snake river. Played around for awhile on the rocks, logs, embankments, deep water and sand. The lift is great for increasing fording depth...I was in deeper today than I have ever been in this truck and I could have gone deeper...think it was 24"-30". The truck crawled over a big log with no clearance probs at all. I got a touch airborn on some sand bar embankments and the front springs are awesome, very soft considering and a big improvement on the rearched ones. I tackled a few embankments on the side of the river to the limits of traction. My high center point has come up a lot and FYI the tank has 3" or so of clearance with the truck up a grade as steep as it will climb. Big Grin

Anyways...that is it.

Yeah, I could use some front springs... The rear Chevy K-10 springs suit me fine as they give me 2" of lift. After having converted to Chevy springs, the rear lifts will come cheap to me!

Now I just gotta find a set of springs that fit the front like that... Chug

Oh, and while Im thinking of it, have you gotten the weber carb and adapter? Do you think it will fit? I kinda fear that it may not fit... I couldnt be sure, though...

Just looking at the stock setup on our Patrols, and how high the top of the stock air cleaner sets up... just kinda worries me...

Maybe you might have to do a small body lift? 1.5"-2"?

Keep us updated on this also...

Fudd, sweet machine. I like the tires much more than I originally thought. I think the Patrols look just right with the tall thin Pizza cutters. Reminds me of the photos I saw as a kid when the Range Rovers and trucks were driving in the jungle. Your paint job on the truck makes a big difference. I suppose I might need to get that done one of these days. The old walmart camo paint, although it is inexpensive, just doesn't grab you.

Parts question Fudd:
Can you order the internal distributor componets? The part that the vac advance ataches to internally is stuck. I have a photo of it in an old Nissan parts manual but I don't think the numbers would match up. By the way what does the vac advance round thing on the side on my distributor do anyway?

Oh, I love your spare tire cover! How much and will it fit my tire if it is a full size?

Thanks

I think the Weber will fit and nope have not put it on yet, was planning to get to it this weekend when I tear into the head. I did measure it and it appears it will fit but will be tight for sure. I figure if it is a problem then I can simply have the adaptor plate shaved down as it is tall and thick. I will let you know how it adapts once I get it on and tuned Wink

here is the truck before lifted for comparison.

here is close shot of my legs and the tank...yes it could be a bit higher!

rear driveline angle and under carriage detail

my ugly mug and the 64 for lifted comparison...I am 5'11"

Hey thanks Jason!Big Grin The paint loks better on film, up close you see the flaws in it. I hate my frame and undercarriage and think it needs clean up. I got a new sandblaster so going to play around with cleaning up and deatil under the truck. Going to keep with the blue and black detail done to some of the front end so far. I dig the pizza cutters myself and these XZL's have great traction in everything I wheeled them in so far plus are not loud on the road. I could go bigger tires now that it lifted but think I will keep these or the other 7.50x16's I have for it...or one set will go with it at time of sale. The syntheic in all the boxes made them leak...typical on these old trucks. So will more than likely fix the seals and depending on how they look stay with syn or go back to normal gear oil. Going to rebuild the head this weekend or start on it too. This should be interesting as it my first head job! Wink Yet I do not want to pay the $600-1200 I was quoted at to do the head. May just have them shave it and put in harden seats...know once it torn down. Also got a console that fits perfect between the buckets. It is tan though so going to paint black then coat with bedliner. Going to paint all my shifters and put the new boot on the transfer rods. Also going to finish my top and install it then do new weather striping on all doors. Lastly going to reline the truck with bed liner and do a bit better job as last time we hurried it. Then I am going to sell this truck!

I will have to check on the internal distro parts but yes I think I can locate them. If not I can get a complete distro and I think it is the water protect, new at good price. My buddies tell me about a simple eletronic conversion they do and it uses some kind of high spark coil. Will have to research this more...I think I may be able to arrange getting this in a kit form that bolts in or has only slight mods. Email me for parts inquires in detail...

Ian, could you e-mail me a pic of the tire cover, too? I was looking for that one pic you posted, but cannot seem to find it...

Gonna check with a local shop and see how much they want for spare tire covers with custom emblems...

From what Ive heard, its CHEAP! But they could easily be mistaken...
