How are 60's Patrols in off-road ability as compared to Toyota's FJ-40 Landcruiser, Jeep's CJ-5, and the SWB Land-Rovers of the 60's?
Ive figured a couple of things out. The Patrol's turning radius was the best out of all of them. Also, its Torque was supposed to have been the best. It was the heaviest if I remember right. And it had an advantage over the CJ-5 and maybe the Rover since it had synchro-mesh. What can yall contribute? only has syncro on 2nd & 3rd. To me not much compairs to my Patrol. I used to love old rovers and TLC's but then I found Patrols, Unimogs and Pinzgauers. I have not driven a TLC other than my 87 a lot or the others either. Yet no need for me as I am in love with my Patrols....I like them (rigs) rare and exotic. The Patrol is both, none of the others have all the features a Patrol does. Some have most features like the FJ40 TLC but not much is as rare as a Patrol in the USA. They just have a certain cool factor that other 60's 4x4's don't have.
If I had to list the benifits of a Patrol it would go like this... -Powerful stock engine that will run forever with good care. -Lift off doors and rear half doors. -easy top to remove -folding windshiled and stock rear spare tire -vents galore -deep fording kit a common thing -rear jump seats -turning radius -early half doors -engine hand crank -stock skid plates -hand primer pump on fuel pump -heater closer valve on engine -drain for radiator at bottem of core -access to sending unit in fuel tank -grease zirks on everything -PTO's front, side and rear if you can find them -fuel tank drain plug The things I hate are all mechanical... -lack of seriously low gear -no syncro on 1st and reverse -no lockers avaiable in USA diffs -no sholder harness belts or roll bar (easy fix) -Lack of frigging PARTS!! -stock seats kind of suck That is about it for me...mostly my love for the Patrol comes from it's looks and functionability. Also it's classic style. I like pre 67 Patrols the most, things like the wiper motors and map light are just plain cool to me. With the stock tool kit, a few spare parts on hand, some duct tape/bailing wire and fieled repairs can be done with ease. They just simply do not make them like this anymore.... |

Well said Fudd! Im gonna have to look at that hand-priming pump! I havent really noticed it. What, exactly, is the deep fording kit? Do you have stock seats? If not, what are they out of? well...the deep fording kit is/has been debated. It was definately the waterproof distro and plug wires plus a waterproof seal from engine to tanny and from tanny to drivelines...at the least. Supposebly also was high vented breathers for tranny/trans and diffs. Plus a water proof gas cap and high breather for the fuel tank...
Yes all my Patrols currently have stock seats they are not very comfortable really and my 64 i just put pics up of will be getting some used buckets from a junkyard soon. |

To awnser your question you keep asking in a diffrent post about mileage. It sucks! Really though on a new Patrol it was supposed to be in the 14 miles per gallon range. Most of us are around 10 miles to the gallon. Off road it sucks it down...4wd low and it really sucks it down.
To compare the Patrol to other 4x4's from the era...well it was not the best or the worst. I do not think there was a best for the 60's as they were still figuring things out. The Patrol stock was about as close to the best as they came IMO. It lacks a super low gear, it is just sheet metal like the rest, cept the Rover. The engine is most powerful of the jeep types but if converting your deal then much better engines these days. The tranny really kinda sucks being a 3spd with no synchro on 1st & rev. It does cruise well at mid speeds. They had some cool options but so did the rest. They are the toughest in my opinion and will last the longest with correct care. Really the only things that make it better than the rest besides what I listed is that this truck is a Nissan! It is also the oldest and longest running 4x4 SUV type rig on the planet....that is pretty cool. I also like its functions and style, otherwise not much better than the rest. More power, heavier....what else is there?? |

Nice! 14mpg would be fine for me... My Chevy S-10 gets 18mpg, and it goes for ever and a day on a tank of gas...

first...I just got and read a really cool old article from a 1962 Desert magazine. It is a 4 page article that is a test of the Patrol. This is the earliest one I have ever seen in the USA. It even states that only soft tops available at the time, that is the truth in 62! Any ways...on the test run the guy picks it up in LA...gets it up to 70mph on the freeway then goes offroading in the desert. He claims a steady 12-14mpg for the day/tank. That is with using 4wd low alot too. So there you have it, a new Patrol perform great. Key word is "new". It really sucks though as 99% of all articles I have ever read on the Patrol said it was the best of the 5 top 4wd in it's class. Nissan failed to get it going here and so that is why we do not have this awesome 4wd today. I would buy a new Patrol if they sold them here
On mil P-trolls....the only real difference is in the looks. A military rig came factory in OD green, had mil tires and zero chrome. All that I have ever seen were also S/T's and all had the rear guard. It has the exact same engine and drivetrain it is just OD green. All embalms, light bezels and so forth came from the factory in OD green also at least early on. I have seen one that had chrome but I think it was more of a governement rig that a fighting force rig. That is it.... |

I found an old Motor Trend article somewhere on the net. Cant remember where, but it was from the March 1964 issue. The article was titled: 6 With 4 Wheel Drive. The 4WD's it covered were the
International-Harvester Scout Kaiser Wagoneer Jeep CJ-7 Land Rover Toyota Landcruiser and Datsun Patrol The Patrol has the best in class for: Comfort(dont know where they got that... LOL) Turning Radius Weight(heaviest) Torque(whoo hoo!) It must have been a pretty impressive little rig back then... I should prolly expect some decent gas mileage out of it since I only have 75,000, and thats on the drivetrain, not the engine... It was towed behind an RV much of its life... hence the demise of its rear-end... Thanks Fudd, for the info! Well...I just ran out o' gas tonight in my 64 with new tank. LOL...we went wheeling and did some pretty good off roading, the gauge is messed up so was guessing on fuel. Get 3 miles from home and dies. I got about 100 miles from the tank plus about 7 more gallons...that is about 23 gallons of fuel for 100-120 miles! Half was in 4 low but still...my engine in this rig is sucking down the gas.
It did run awesome though.... |

I know...horrible milage. Yet, on most old Patrols besides my 66 this has been the case. On my 67 I had ten years ago same deal...100-140 miles per tank. I think I got such bad milage this time round because we were off roading so much. 4 low and I do have a heavy foot. It is just an old engine that keeps on running long after irt should be dead....
