Spamed my own topic already with pics...so here is some blah'ing!
You have to understand that I don't have parts available to me for this truck. So I got to source stuff halfway around the world and then get it shipped to me. Rolling Eyes So far I have stock piled a front ARB locker, strengthened Yuri CV's, Yuri custom high steer knuckle http://www.yuri4x4.com/cv_joints.php, a custom bulletproof draglink http://bulletproofsteering.com/custom.html , nice factory PTO winch, shafts, shifter and box, 100' of Masterpull MP 3/8" winch line, MP fairlead, 100' of MP 3/8" winch extension line, factory clinometer in great shape, front diff full rebuild kits, factory free wheeling hubs, new tranny mounts, new outside mirror heads, new high rise and a few other things I forgot. Next purchase is going to be a 1999 GU Patrol clutch which will work on an SD33. It is a 11" disc and heavy duty pressure plate suited for the 4.2l TD. At same time buying new vented rotors and pads. When I get to the SoA I plan to use custom high angle drivelines, http://www.highangledriveline.com/ . And my current plan is to convert the stock drum e-brake to a disc assembly. Eventually will convert rears to discs but have to get an H233 under the truck first! Plan to run MRW beadlocks at max offset, http://www.rockcrawler-mrt.com/beadlock%20wheel%2016%20inch.html and 36" Maxxis Creepies. But that is a $2500 purchase for rims and tires! May get to the SoA this year or may not. Either way I will have all the junk sitting here ready to go in the P-troll. While I don't have piles of cash to toss at the truck I am not buying cheap parts or making stuff. Rather buying quality nice gear because I am just like that! |

tig welding chopped fender Chopped, welded up and mostly ground back... other side is getting there too... rear bumper being built. The wavy part is scribed for the rear cross member. tranny cover cleaned up and ready to go. Hole on right I cut for PTO shifter. tire carrier nearly all blasted and clean. We are going to mount the high rise to the top of the tire carrier. Will be strengthening the tire carrier up a bit too. 2" pipe under it is for sliders and some front bar work. PTO box is bolted in... old rust hole in bed I tried to patch a year or two ago. Welded up nicely now using a mig not a stick. patch ground down and primed. Could have cleaned it up more but this will do for me. another old rust spot that needed to be dealth with. This is LHS rear of sill before I ground it down. the caps for the rear quarter chop. These will be welded up under the cut quarter, I was suprised they fit pretty well. tranny cover and PTO shifter all cleaned up and ready to go. |

nearly done with it. Just need to weld on brackets for mounting to frame rails, brackets for the sides to mount to frame rails, weld on a few gussets and weld on D-ring anchor points. this is what the junkyard mirrors I got from Aus. look like...needless to say the guy who sold me these went out of business, wonder why!? I am blasting the arms and mounting hardware and installing the new heads I just got. hard to tell but I cut off the bent arm on the pto shifter, flipped it over and welded it back on. I had to do this because this is a RHD PTO shifter which means it was hitting on my transfer case shifter rods. Also still have to cut off a bracket which guides the rod and fab a new one then weld that on the base of the shifter. This is also because it is a RHD PTO shifter. Last thing to do before it is operational is fab up a new bracket at the box for the shifter rod. seized pin on the tire carrier hinge. Soaking it but not looking good... took me all day to sandblast these 20 parts and clean up then prime. at least I got a coat of paint on it all before I called it a day. Looks like I am going to be running GQ (Y60) series free wheeling hubs and CV's. Yuri is unable to get MQ CV's at this time to heat treat, supplier is out of stock. But there is a very small mod to run GQ CV's in the MQ front diff. It requires using GQ free wheeling hubs. So I can't say I am to disappointed since in the end I will have stronger CV's and stronger hubs. The GQ CV's are a touch larger. Looking at buying a complete 1985 MK Patrol from Aus. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/nissan-patrol_W0QQitemZ320138264...QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem It is fairly cheap, has a lot on it like recently rebuilt 5spd, transfer, suspension and it has a SD33T. It is also 12v so that is good too. I get a rear H233 , body panels (want to use the Aussie doors), spare top and much more if I buy a whole truck so plan to do this and just import it for parts since it won't be street legal (not 25yrs old). I need a turbo block before doing motor work, I may need a different bellhousing than I have to mount the 5spd, I want to convert my Patrol to 12v, I need a H233 rear before I do a SoA. So importing a whole truck is just looking like the best way to go.... |

Was up in Wyoming last week. I thought of you when I drove through Meeker, CO by an old gas station with 4 early Patrols in the lot out front. I got pictures, but haven't had a chance to upload them yet.
A SD33T in one of those with an H233 rear would be awesome. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. You're on the road to heaven - Kerouac |

I agree it would rock to drop a SD33T and MQ/MK diffs into an old Patrol. Marv at Specter Offroad has just that. Well sort of...he has the only LG61 in the USA. It has a factory 4spd (same as the MQ) and C200 diffs front and rear. He is dropping an SD33 into it....seen pics and it will be sweet!
here are pics of the Bulletproof drag link and Yuri high steer.... The top bearing cap bolts have been reamed out to resolve the problem with C200's and SoA. Prob is the bolts always come loose on the high steer arm or break which is real bad. Damien uses this same set up on his comp buggy so I trust it will work great for me! |

finished Yuri high steer arm. masterpull 3/8" winch line, 3/8" extension line and fairlead. This weekend involved a lot of drilling. Drilling in hardened steel which is no fun without a drill press. I had to drill the tie rod and the pitman arm out to 3/4" and from tapered holes to normal holes. It sucked bad. :? I could have pulled the tie rod and drag link but instead did them in the truck. Which made it suck worse and the holes are not perfect but it is solid and will do. Just was very time consuming. Also had to drill the draglink bolts for cotter pins and did some drilling on the rear bumper mounts. Remember the draglink set up I am running now is temporary until I do a SoA. Mostly we just needed to remove the relay junk so I could mount the PTO winch all the way back. My draglink is at a bit of an angle and I am running the hemi joints at a 90 degree angle from each other. Both and not real good but the thing lined up real nice and the steering is really tight and responsive. I don't have a steering damper in now and will have to make a bracket plus get a new damper. But for right now the drag link is in... out with the old and in with the new. there is a few things about the draglink that I am not stoked on such as it is really close to the tie rod adjusting bracket. Had to use 3 spacers and grind a few mm off the tie rod to avoid rubbing. It is also close to the tire all full lock to the left due to being spaced out far. But nothing is touching and it is tight. The angle is also a bit much but my pitman arm is inverted, like flipped upside down. This is how it comes from the factory. I think I will go with a custom pitman arm once the SoA is done because this factory one is a bit light duty for my tastes. Once the high steer is in draglink will level back out. polished up the aluminum PTO winch. Had to enlarge the hole for holding the start of the cable since the winch line has a bigger end. PTO winch cage starting to come together. Cut the body a bit to suck it back in. oh ya it will sit way back in there good. um maybe you can start to see what we are doing... tow points are actually slotted into the rear bumper and go back into the frame rails. 1" hole for towing from and I think we used 3/8" steel on this or maybe it was 1/2" Also built the brackets for the sides of the bumper to mount it to frame and drilled them but no the rear bumper isn't done yet... :? I am going to be running GQ CV's which are slightly larger than the MQ/MK CV's. These will be heat treated and a ring welded on them. Will be running GQ factory f/w hubs too...both just require very small and simple mods. Yuri, the place that made the high steer arm, modded a knuckle and is supplying the CV's/hubs has a H233 rear and front r&p in 4.6. He can also mod the rear to suit disc brakes before he ships it off. The price of the gear is pretty reasonable so think I may go with it. |

Ian, that is really looking sweet! Lots of work, but well worth it. Given your ability to locate and import all those parts, you should have worked for the US Gov't to help out on the trade deficit.

100% completed high steer with modded knuckle. I am scheduled with a shop in Idaho for the SoA and front end rebuild including locker fitting. Quoted me at $500 for the SoA and $300 for front end work. That is just for labor costs but pretty solid price I would say. The shop is CBI Offroad. Thing is I have to get the rear H233 before the SoA can take place. Yuri will start on my rear H233 disc conversion soon if all goes well. Then I got to get it shipped over here from Oz. I would never work for the government, I enjoy being self employed. |

Well I just spent some coin on my Patrol! Roodogs on ebay Aus. has just supplied me with a bunch of goodies I needed.
I bought... -2 front wheel bearing kits -1 front diff bearing kit -1 swivel hub kit, ie knuckle rebuild kit -Exedy Safari Tuff TD42 GU Patrol diesel clutch -Autotecnica boss kit -Autotecnica sports steering wheel Neil (Roodog) checked the TD42 clutch and sure enough he says it is the same spline count and also same diameter clutch plate. So it WILL WORK! For those who don't know the Exedy Safari Tuff clutch is pretty much hands down the best clutch you can get anywhere for a Patrol. They don't even make one for the MQ/MK but I will be running it!! I got all the front end parts for the coming front diff rebuild, locker fitting, high steer fitting and GQ CV's going in. I figure why the hell shouldn't I rebuild the whole thing when it gets torn down for the ARB, CV's and high steer!? here is a run down on the clutch... SAFARI TUFF The EXEDY Safari Tuff clutch range has been purpose engineered to meet the demands of serious off road four wheel driving. Design features include clutch discs with upgraded damper mechanisms and high coefficient premium grade friction materials making the Safari Tuff clutch disc the ultimate choice for serious off road drivers. All Safari Tuff pressure plates are anodised to minimise corrosion and for ease of identification, also incorporating ductile anti burst pressure plate castings, which disperse heat more effectively when operated under duress. Pressure plate clamping loads are increased by up to 50% and additional drive straps (straps holding pressure plate casting to cover pressing) are used to improve durability. and here is a tiny picture of it! Here is a picture of the sports wheel I will be using... Um can you tell I am excited? The steering wheel I been trying to get my hands on for like 2-3yrs. I just happened to luck out and ask the right guy who could indeed help me out. |
