ya I suppose you are right. I have torn both front knuckles down in last couple weekends and inner axle is the smallest weakest link in the diff. 4.6 diff ratio makes the pinion slightly weak though too. I am hoping hubs is actually weakest link. Hubs super easy to change! Some of the Aussie guys buff up the diffs using built CV's and custom axles but then run pos hubs. The idea being hubs go first and are super easy and fast to change! I kind of like this idea!

little update on my Pootrol....

have torn down both front axles/knuckles. I had to tear one down to get the knuckle off and drill out broken stud which is steering stop. Busted that on the AZ run. Taken the truck wheeling 3x since AZ Run in mud/water, RHS knuckle and hub were fairly clean. LHS was filthy! Also bit of water in RHS and more in LHS. So damn glad I tore it down. Cleaned all bearings and repacked with grease. Cleaned CV's and repacked, same for knuckle. Everything is cool, bearings good just were dirty. But I noticed the axle stub that knuckle bolts onto was a bit rusty, slightly pitted and had grease embedded in the pitted rust. So out with the 9" and a wire brush. Then went to 125grit and worked up to 600grit. Nice and polished now, then I painted them well. Looks good and worked out well. Should help a lot to keep junk out of the knuckle. Also the fab guy had welded new steering stop tabs on the axle tube but forgot to grind them back into a triangle shape so they were just 3/8" square tabs of steel. Steering stop bolt was not contacting this squarely so this caused me to break the bolt. Couldn't get 9" in there or the cut off tool so I just busted out the dremel and ground it back. Pretty good to go now!

Waiting on new alt to get here from Oz. Had hoped it would show up this week but no go. Should show up next week then truck is back in action! Going to pull PTO box on it and swap on a better box I have. Hook up shifter and adjust and PTO winch is good to go. That is about it for now....

I did buy a 84 Pootrol in Toowoomba Australia for $1200. It has rot from beach work but I don't care! What it has that I want it an SD33T on 12v. Yuri 4x4 in OZ will be building this motor up for me with lot's of mods, starting that soon. He is stripping parts for me like all 12v electricals, spare 5spd tranny, inner axles and CV's (then I have 2 spare sets of CV's), and lot's of other little odds and ends.

I was hoping to do the crawler box, 38's and 16" shocks soon. But I think I may put that off for awhile and get the motor done up. Do other things as I can afford. But mostly focus on the motor, going to be a real expensive project, already quotes up to $7k and we just getting started!!

The busted steering stop nut on knuckle is all fixed up. Front end all cleaned and repacked with grease. Steering stop tabs on axle ground back to a triangle shape to help stop the prob of breaking the nut. Cleaned, polished and painted end of axle tube where knuckle seals. Pto is back in action, fitted other better box I had and adjusted it all. Just waiting for a new winch cable before it is in working order. Changed all fluids in boxes and diffs. New alternator fitted and working tops! Spendy bastard but I got's a new vac pump too and no more charging probs., red tops are happy now! My old alt. looks vintage, ie 25years old.

Took truck out yesterday and flogged it as hard as I could on the mild trails. Did lot's of high speed shit and I just love my suspension! Also crawled over many large logs no probs at all, deep river fun was also to be had. Everything is working good for the time being....

To do list (soon):
-Fit new water pump and change belts
-check thermostat and toss in new one I have if needed
-flush radiator and cooling system
-buy Co2 tank for shocks and air tank for tires
-possibly adjust timing a touch
-clean up and paint some shit under the truck
-fix/mount new antenna with spring for CB
-fix tail lights
-change engine oil
-fit new winch cable! (free to me)
-fit cheapo choke cable to injection pump governor so I can shut down truck without lifting the hood!

long term to do list:
-engine build (just about ready to start!)
-16" Fox
-new 16" beadlock rims
-crawler box (Klune)
-more rear diff skid
-re-wire whole truck
-fit new seats
-body work
-exo cage
-new tire carrier, jerry can hlder, jack holder
-38" rubber
-cutting brakes finished up
-rear disconnect
-hydro assist steering
-interior crap like all new gauges, tool boxes, mounts for flashlight/axe/shovel/air tank, overhead console

Ah, Money pits.

I know the feeling. Just 3" more lift in back has turned into a $1200 2 month long project for me.

wow your long term list is radical.

New engine
38" tires
exo cage
hydro assist

With those upgrades you'll be able to handle anything.

Ya well I am after a Patrol that can handle comps even if I won't compete in it. I like all kinds of wheeling from rocks to mud to dirt to hills to river crossings. I want my truck to be ready for it all and still be drivable on the street. My biggest prob right now is the engine is old and tired plus lacking power on pavement. So that is the next thing to do...rebuild/work the engine.

Hi Fudd pretty nice job you this to your rig.
Currently I have a MK83 same color, i started mods a year ago, the last i did was to include rear extended shackels, chang shock position and change shocks for 21".

I am thinking on coils in front but looking at your rig this system looks very interesting, could you tell me more about how it works and show more picture about it.

cool looking Patrol! I like it!! Chug

By the looks of your license plate you are in Colombia, South America?

There is a lot of pictures of my front end right here in this thread. Check page 7 and or 8. It is a 3-link with a panhard bar with rear being a triangulated 4-link. Basically for the front two lower links and one upper link with the panhard behind the diff. Steering is also custom and not stock. Although I am using the stock p/s box. I ride on 12" Fox air shocks. There is no coils or coil over or springs of any kind just the air shock. I could fit a coil over air shock though if I wanted to.

If I was you I would look at fitting Y60/Y61 GQ/GU Patrol diffs. At least in the front. They are much stronger and if I had to do it all again I would fit these diffs. The Y60 diffs are wider though if coil sprung. If you can find a Y60 leaf sprung diff it will be narrower and closer to what you have. If looking at doing custom suspension it doesn't really matter if it is coil or leaf sprung because you will be cutting all that out and making your own. To change the rear diff to a Y60 will be more difficult since the diff pumpkin (center) is offset on the 160 series Patrol but not on the Y60.

If you want more specifics or have questions just ask away!

very interesting, one question, the shocks has any control to inflate or defalte them? or they are just conect them to the Chasis and you inflate them to certain psi's

I was just looking at the tear down of the front axle again. The C200 front axle looks very similar to the Toyota axle that made it to the states. closed knuckles, external locking hubs and birfield axles. Whats the aftermarket availability for those front axles?

If you mean the shocks controlled in cab with a system like the Rancho shocks has then NO.

But yes you can control them in terms of psi by using a co2 tank. So yes you can set the pressure in the shock that you desire for ride heigth and also for flex (soft/hard).

What do you mean after market dude? Do you mean can we get buffed up axles and such like longfields? If so then no not off the shelf. But there are mods you can do to make them stronger like upgrading to H233 CV's and hubs as I have done. C200 front is a common axle in Aus. because every MQ/MK has one!

yea I was thinking along the lines of longfield. I'm sure you could have a set of shafts made. I'm just surprised how similar the axle is.

They are available for the C200 and other Nissan diffs. But only on a one-off custom cut to order deal. Meaning more expensive than longfields because each set would be cut to order.
