I just finished my rochester carb rebuild on my 69. She purrs like a kitten now. I will begin my intensive testing this week after a complete fluids change. Anyone have an opinion on types of oil weight for the engine, tranny and axles?

Fudd, any luck with your carb problems?

Hey dude....my carb was still giving me probs when I last messed with it. I have been out of the country and haven't messed with it since my last post. I need to check timing again and clean the tank and lines before I can get rid of a few possiblities. What did you set your float at in the Rochester? How about your adjustments, where did you set them?

In my red 66 I put all Amsoil synthetic and it seem to like it a lot.

Hi Ian,

Good to hear that you are back online. Well the deal with my Carb, I would not say that my carb is tuned in perfect; however, it runs smoothly and seems to warm up rather well. About the float, without looking at the paperwork in the rebuild kit again(I'm trying to find it) I can't tell you what I set it to. But I recall taking the flaot numbers for the inline Chevy 6 cylinder engines from the 60's. I found that I had to adjust the float a little bit. That might be my problem as to why it is not tuned in perfect. I seem to be getting rough gas milage. I estimate about 10 mpg at 7000 feet. Do you think that sounds resonable?

well...milage I think depends on several things, age of engine, wear on engine, mileage on engine, carb, possibly oil in diffs/tranny and tire pressure. I think 10mpg is fairly decent for a Patrol, good would be in the 12-14 range and best possible with rebuilt engine and all ios probily 15-16mpg. Most of my Patrols are getting 9-12mpg.

I set my carb to the same Chevy specs it said in the specs sheet. My prob with it is that I can't lean it down enough to how an idle, it just seems to want to run to rich and then it fouls the plugs. I still haven't checked timing but that could be it or I could now have some rust junk back in the carb. Just a bit cold right now to work on a rig outside....
