Here's what I spent my entire weekend working on.. Still not quite done, but its at least to a point where I don't have to worry about the roof getting rained on.

I replaced the severely rotten/sun damaged fascia on the south side of the my house. This required replacing 1 square of shingles, the roofing paper, drip edging, etc etc...

This is all just leading up to the big project: Repainting the house. yay for me!

Heres some pics:

The South side of the garage torn down, just after removing the fascia:

Had to remove a lot of shingles to even get to the nails holding the fascia on.

Here is after replacing the fascia and drip edge:

Here is what was removed. What you can't see is the twist in the boards. THere was about 1/8 turn from one end to the other on one of them. THe other one is permanently "C" shaped from the sun. Frown

Still need to install the stringers and cut and install the boards that go under the eves:

And here are a couple of bad pics with the shingles finally installed..

Once this littel project is finished, I can start repairing the rest of the fascia and replacing ALL the trim on the sides of the house with primed rough cut 1x4 lumber to get rid of the water damaged fiberboard trim.

Then, once that is done, its time to paint! I just need to figure out what color its going to be.

Big project... I'm sore.

C'mon over and help me do the same Wink only I have to strip off two layers of shingle, replace some sheeting, starter board, and all facia.

DId you put a row of starter shingle under the drip edge along the rake? I guess it's rec'd as it tends to keep water dripping down to the eaves and away from dripping off the rake.

Roofer wants 7K to do the roof- about 20 squares. I think I'll just budget it out for next SPring or Summer, and do it myself.

In the meantime a tarp keeps the leaks at bay.

Yep, I put a starter row of shingles down.

$7k is insane. I'm told thats about what it costs, but that is ridiculous.

I bought 2.5 square for this project for $130. Ended up only using 1 square. At that price, the materials would run you about $1050 for 20 square..

When it comes time to do mine, I'll probably end up doing it myself. I can't justify $10k to do something that will cost me about $2000 in raw materials to do... even if it takes me a couple weeks to finish it.

Do it yourself, Bille. My boys helped me do 37 squares of architectural shingles after Katrina. It took us a week. That was four years ago, so they were only 7 and 10. They couldn't lift much, but they were a huge help in rolling out the felt, and setting the shingles close to final position. I was the one running the nail gun.

We bought a new nail gun just for this project. It paid for itself in one job. I can always sell it to get some of my investment back. I suggest you consider doing the same.
I also bought a hammer type stapler. Again, money well spent.

Sorry to get off topic. John, I admire your sense of responsibility. You took on a boring job in spite of all the fun projects that surround you. Nice work as always. You are an inspiration and a paragon for us all.

Thanks! That means a lot. I'd been putting this work off for a long time, but am glad that I did it.

The house will be a night and day difference once I get all the fascia repaired, the trim replaced, and all of it painted. I'm still trying to figure out what color to do. Will probably stick to a neutral scheme, since the house is visible across the desert park across the street.

Exactly, all we have to purchase toolwise is a nice coil nailer- you have the compressor handled. WElll, maybe another length of hose...

Frown And maybe a few sessions w/ a good mammasan to walk on our backs after it's all over.

John, you could get your roof done for a LOT less than 10k.

For a full tearoff and replacement, I'm thinking it'd be about half that to have a roofer do it if you got multiple bids and got them haggling.

Still cheaper to do it yourself, but it is a big job, and when a roofer does it, you get a warranty.

YOu're forgetting one very important point in favor of doityerself- bananait gives us a reason to buy another tool.

Besides the warranty doesn't mean squat when anyone w/ half a brain can do a good job that will last. Permit it and get it inspected, should be all that's needed should there ever be a problem w/ the shingles themselves.

A good roofing text from home Cheepo, tutorials from the Web for more tricks, and the installation PDF form the manf in hand, should be all that's needed. The only thing that 's half a pain is keeping rows straight( that's what chalk lines are for) and weaving the valleys.
( valley flashing can minimize that).

Nailing depth needs to be watched carefully, but a good nailer should miimize those hassles.
Fashion up a jig for a circular saw to make reproducable straight cuts, and the angle cuts for the valleys( assuming flashing), and the hassle/risk is minimized even further.

Cutting shingles w/ razor knife can be done, but is not recomended. Blades dull very quick and cuts aren't easy. Just need a carbide circular saw blades.

Keep alcohol off the roof, a good supply of gatorade ,and good sense when walking around near the edge, and it's almost a walk in the park.

A heavier shingle- maybe" architectural"
( looks almost like a real shake shingle) is a better choice for high wind area. Owens COrning and GAF have some nice architectural type shingles... Need to stay away from home cheepo to find it- unless special order.

In my area , there's a roofing supplier that will deliver bundles to the top of the roof free of charge w/ your order. Humping bundles up a ladder is no fun.
And there's also tax credits for using "energy star" rated shingles. These have granules that don't absorb/transfer as much heat to the roof sheeting/ atticcrawl space below, but you have to crunch the numbers. THey are more expensive to begin with and it may not offset the tax credit, but they do keep attic cooler, but then again, so does foil backed sheeting- even using storebought foil does the trick.

We're there ever "lookouts" (stringers)?

Those normally bridge over the top of the rake wall and go back to the next truss. Maybe they just installed them different since the overhang is so short.

I went to the Owens-Corning shingle site and followed their instructions. The same instructions were on the package, but it was easier to read online.

To give a ballpark cost, I went with 37 squares of 30-year architectural plus 15lb felt, a couple of shingle spades, a coil nailer, a fancy utility knife, a good set of knee pads, muck, putty knives, facia board, all new drip edge, and a few other essentials. The total cost was around $2,200. My brother-in-law worked a Lowe's at the time, and got me a discount. Smile

Yeah, there was a single lookout at the peak. It was in pretty sad shape due to weather getting behind that rotted fascia.

I'm going to be cutting a new one and putting that in as well as adding stringers in several places down the rake to help strengthen the fascia and hopefully prevent warping in the future. The way the house was originally built, there were no stringers at all other than that one at the top. I'm going to add in at least 6 of them along that side.

Excuse to buy new tools? Got plenty of those already. Roofing sucks. I've done it on smaller scales (sheds, etc) and hate it.

It's better when it's not 100 degrees out, but it's still one of those things I'd rather pay someone else to do. Exterior painting is the same way...just got my house done again (under warranty - had some peeling)

I've done a crapload of work inside the house though.

Up on that roof it sure felt like eleventy billion degrees. Had to be 95-100F up there. WAY better than summer tho. Smile I try to save all the outdoor house projects for the winter. The only time I'll go up on the roof in the summer is at night, and its still stinkin hot!

I'm still downing water.. got a little dehydrated.

DOn't forget the salt to help retain water. I just had an attack of leg cramps last night from going on a hike early in the day. Sweated like a pig on the hike and was squeeling like one when the cramps hit me.

Salt stopped the cramps cold.
