I always was always taught you should replace gears and chain as a set. How long do you expect the chain to last w/ worn gears?

The gears showed no signs of wear or damage. The gear teeth/chain teeth did not wear to a degree that can be detected. What happened is the pins that run through the chain links wore. If each one wore slightly, they added up to cause enough extra length to climb over the gears. In most cases, the wear causes a change in tooth pitch that wears the teeth. In this case, the teeth were probably wide enough or made well enough to hold up, unlike a motorcycle chain or timing chain. I had no specs to compare or measure them to. Everything runs quietly. If it only lasts 15 more years I'll be happy.

WEll, if the stretched chain was climbing the gears( and not seated down in the "gullets") and the pitch didn't change between gear teeth, then I guess you're ahead on the cost of new gears.
