Last year it was flooring, paint, baseboards, ceiling molding...basically a shitload of work on the upstairs of the house. This year I scaled it back a bit. I had this space at the end of the kitchen divider by the pantry that was begging for something. Since I have lots of CDs and movies and no good storage for them, I decided some sort of storage unit was in order.

Total tally was around $400. $70 for steel (60 feet of 1" strap, about the same of 1" angle iron), $250ish for lumber, screws, glue, stain, varnish, sandpaper, caster, etc., and just over $80 for a 6' 3" piano hinge. I wanted a rustic look, and I'm pretty happy with the results, as I'm no carpenter.

I used a caster to roll across the floor and take stress off the hinge, as each side of this thing weighs close to 100lbs empty.

Side view from the kitchen side by the pantry:

Side view from the front room side:

Couple shots of it opened up:

The whole thing took 5 full days of work start to finish. It took a long time to cut all the pieces of angle in 6" pieces to support the 1x8 shelves. The exterior front, and the back board is 1/4" sanded plywood (expensive stuff). Sides are 2x8s - wall stud type variety, so you can imagine the sanding, etc.

I figure I drilled over 300 screw holes in the steel pieces. I don't want to cut or drill metal for a while now. It took almost 4 cans of rattlecan to paint all the steel, and it took a crapload of screws, both machine screws and drywall screws to put it all together, but I'll tell you this - it ain't going anywhere.

It'll hold almost 800 CDs on the CD side and probably 400+ DVDs if I ever get a movie collection that big.

Very cool, was expecting to see a rifle or two, in there, tho smiley17

Wink I'm mean, that would be practical thing-a combination CD and rifle/gun storage.. You could start a trend all over the redneck south, just sell some plans on Ebay.

I have weapons elsewhere. Specifically, where they can remain locked up when kids are home and I'm not.

It looks like it turned out well. Lots of "grow room", too.

Strangely, I find myself staring in wonder at the purple wall in the first pic......

It's not purple. It's burgundy like the window treatments. I took the pics at dusk and the lighting is wierd.

The purple room is upstairs. It's the same color as the burgundy on this pic of one of the other upstairs bedrooms:

Nicely done Andy, I had that problem a while ago (too many DVD's) but decided to go another route, I went with a Sony 400 Disc DVD/CD Changer. I got mine on sale for $299, but I usually find it for around $349 on sale now. Saves a lot of room not having to store all those cases and it's the greatest... a big video jukebox of CD's and DVD's.

Just another option...

Alright...you purple wall hating bastards.

This room was a lot of work. In fact, the entire upstairs was. All the baseboards, flooring, and celing molding is new, and it netted me a happy wife. Happy wife = happy Andy.

And hey, at least it's not orange.

Gator, you talking about my gay truck, when your sig pic shows yours exposing its vay-jay to the world? smiley6
