This has been done on a few 33 spline D22 models:

I don't believe Mike has an XOC screen name but his screen name on the www.uxoc.org forum is Weelit.

The mod basically consists of unbolting the driveshaft, pulling the axles, removing the third member, unbolt the bearing caps, remove the diff, removing the ring gear, split the diff case, remove the friction plate retaining clips(they no longer fit with the extra disc)put a new friction disc in each side bolt it back together. Check and or adjust the backlash, run a pattern, bolt it all back together, and fill up the gear oil.

You need some rear end knowledge (not that kind of rear end ) to do it but a decent mechanic with some time on his hands can accomplish it.

As far as the friction disc part numbers, I don't know those. Mike attained the parts for me.

Tire wear will be an issue because it is now just a complicated spool or fused spool as I like to call it

Um, why does the R&P need to be set up again? Nothing has changed that would affect their engagement. This should be a DIY job for anyone with common tools and skill.

Part numbers:
38433-C6004 is the 1.4 mm thick disc
38433-C6002 is the 1.5 mm thick disc
38433-C6003 is the 1.6 mm thick disc

I'd like to know exactly which thickness TK and Weelit used. If they used a 1.5 or a 1.6, it might be a little less spool-like with a 1.4. If they used 1.4 already, well, I guess we'll just have to live with it.

At least for 2000 models, there are 5 friction discs, 6 friction plates, and 2 spring plates per side. I've heard rumor that the 02 and/or 03 Xterras have more discs but are likely built with thinner ones so the overall pack thickness/tension is somewhat higher than before. I have nothing to back this up.

The ESM notes the following:
Always position a friction plate first on rear of side gear.
