Need to be in AZ for some business ~ 3rd week in Nov so I'm thinking about wandering off the beaten path and taking Route 66 with some of the old alignments all the way to NM at some place before heading back. I'll going to have some extra time so want to hit some off road area and other sites along the route.
Any suggestions? Is Hackberry that place we hit for AZ 5 or is that somewhere else? So far thinking about Petrified Forest NM and the Cinder Cones OHV area outside Flagstaff. |

The Hackberry creek trail we ran is a couple hundred miles south of anywhere Route 66 goes. Route 66 follows I40 for the most part, with some deviation in northwestern AZ - it turns more northerly from Seligman.
East of Flagstaff, you pretty much have Navajo land to the north of the road, and there are mountains several miles to the south. Petrified Forest and Canyon De Chelly are diversions you could go see (Canyon De Chelly is quite a ways north up on the res, but I hear it's awesome). As far as wheeling goes, you'll be going near the Cinder OHV area northeast of Flagstaff. South of Williams you could also take the forest roads to the top of Bill Williams Mountain there. There's some pretty awesome views up there, though it's by no means a hardcore 4x4 road. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on.
