Thats true, its very nice.

I dont think people having reservations is a reason to stay in an area that doesnt have much. Dont get me wrong, Im ok with light wheeling, I just like getting out, but ocotillo is really a dirt bike park.

Fugh Mexicali, unless you want to get rolled, shot, held up at gunpoint, have your rig stolen. MExico is the new wild west- only the bad guys wear badges.

After the meet the crawlers could either run up FAult Wash >SHort Wash>>> Font's Wash to S22 , which goes in to Borrego Springs - to the RV park, or past DiGiorgio Rd- jump off point for Coyote CAnyon- the trail to Anza- the RV park, or they could just take the blacktop over from OW( but what's the fun in that?).

The Santa Rosa Mtn/ TOro Peak trailhead is on the way home for the ZOnies ,and anyone headed north... It's the PInes to PAlms Hwy( hwy 74 that intersects w/ Hwy371 that goes through ANza)- it heads down to Palm Desert.

never been on it( need 4wd)_, but stock IFS can make it.

In my R2WD( locker in back) haVE been all over OW ( up Blow Sand Hill even)and up to the Badlands, down the Borrego droppoff via Buttte's Pass rd-camping in Hawk canyon is spectacular, and sheltered- - it's popular spot west of OW proper about 4 miles as crow flies),
, all through Fish creek up and down- bassackwards until 2 miles before the PInyon mtn dropoff( there's a tough downhill crawl goin west at that point), lots of soft sand that can be managed w/ proper airdown, out to the Carrizo Stage Station via Canyon Sin Nombre( that's way to the south on S2)- We didn't see any ghosts- down the DIablo Dropoff and out into Fish Creek.

I can email some pics to you for perspective.

pic found online > Sandstone Cnyn( off of upper Fish Crk)

and if you keep going up the Fish- the Pinyon Mtn Droppoff( Heart Attack Hill)
which really should be done the other way. It's slippery DG over hardrock.

I think some folks will want to head up the back way- through FISH Creek- to attempt the bassackwards climb/watch others come down Pnyn mtn dropoff
( about 22 miles in from Split Mtn/Fish Creek trailhead),dawdle around the Windcaves, and other branches off the main crk, maybe head over to the Diablo dropoff("dropup"- from the bottom).

Other, more brave souls ,will head back up the 78 to Scissors( 20 miles roughly)-turning left there and going south on S2, down 4.5 miles to Pinyon Mtn rd( left-east) to hit the Squeeze and Pinyon Dropoff from the correct direction. NO fullsize/fullwidth trucks/axles- the Squeeze will stop those.. INquiring w/ local ranger would be advised to get updates on trail conditions. And watching that last fid you posted is recommended

From the Pnyn Mtn turnoff on S-2, it's 31 miles to Split Mtn/Fish Creeek Trailhead at the bottom.

I'm pretty sure that you are supposed to only go through pinion dropoff one way (it's makred as a one way trail on the map.)

true, true, but there's nothing stopping folks from going up Fish for 20 some odd miles, to the bottom of it, sending a spotter/s to the top to make sure noone's coming from that direction, then giving it a shot, if they dare. I've seen it done- a few years by a modified jeep.

. It's very steep at the top and slippery the whole way.
It's one way, because it's extremly difficult from the bottom ,easy to endo goingup( and down) and rangers don't like rescues/vehicle recoveries.
