What kind of bed does everyone have?

We had a waterbed for several years. The wife loved it. My back was sore all the time. Talked her into getting rid of it and still hear about it.

How we have a Serta and I still can not sleep on it. Currently I load up on Tylenol and then go to bed. Once the meds wear off ( about 4-5 hours) I wake upo and can not stay in bed due to lower back and hip pain.

I have to do something because I could not even begin to tell you the last time I slept for more than 6 hours and have been taking naps in the Pathy at lunch because I am tired.

Any suggestions.

Sleep numbers are the shit. Fully adjustable. If you can't get comfortable in one of those, you'll never be comfortable in anything.

Ours dropped right into our waterbed frame.

Stop taking the tylenol-give your liver a rest and try something that might actually give your body the goods it needs to actually heal up.

I'm speaking of a product called COSAMIN DS. It's one of a few that actually has in it what's listed on the label-unlike the other 95%of the same product(different vendors) that don't. DOn't get anything else.

It's a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement.

DOn't space out the dose throughout the day- take it all at once . I take 4 pills in the morning- that's 2000mg.

IN the evenings ,a couple hours before bed ,take 500mg MAGNESIUM citrate, as well.

ANother thing that helps me is drinking more water, I invariably start to feel like crap when I get dehydrated- back being my achiest part to object first.

We have a SL bed as well. No comparison to anything else on the market. I found one gently used for a grand. Definitely the way to go.

WELL.....seeing I've been selling mattresses/boxsprings for well over 5 yrs now, I know, that going from a waterbed to a normal spring coil OR foam mattress....you want/need something SOFT, yet SUPPORTIVE!!!!! This includes the Sleep Number System(...though I've never saw/sold them where we are...but I did see the late night ads on TV), the ALL foam memory foam beds [similar to the Swiss made Tempur-Pedic Memory Foam mattresses....but we(www.PageBedding.com...see sig) have one that's JUST as nice OR a 'lil nicer....Big Grin], AND...your conventional coil-spring mattress! (in a Queen size you should have no less than 800 coils for "top-o-the-line", and for King size the mattress should have at least 1000 coils! Hope this helps! Feel free to e-mail me w/ any other Q's!!! Later...

p.s. What...EVER...you DO....do NOT get a "hard-as-a-brick / hardest one ya have" mattress! GET something SOFT, yet Supportive!!!! AND for God sake's...if ya call Page Bedding...let them know that YOU know me (Korie) so that you get a discount anywhere from 5% up to 20% off select items depending on size of bedding. (Jesus...I sound like an "F"-ing Advetisement!!!! Big Grin) Later...

The SL beds can be either soft or "hard-as-a-brick,hardest one ya have", depending on how you feel that night. No other bed that I know of can do that. The foam beds are too hot IMO. SN beds are way overpriced, but until an alternative comes along (why there isn't one I have no idea) it's the best thing going.

Something to consider when shopping: Select Comfort makes several different lines. The ones you can buy at Sleep America or your local chain store are not the same ones sold at a Select Comfort store. I don't know which are better, but IIRC the ones in discount chain stores are wood frames, while the ones they ship are plastic frames and easier to ship because they come apart and assemble on site. The frames aren't even required, they're just a hard surface to put the matress on, you could use a waterbed frame as mentioned earlier. I believe the matresses are the same, but not sure. Some of the compressors are quieter than others, which is nice but not strictly necessary because you don't adjust them all the time. Do some shopping and let the dealers educate you.

You just made me think of something....and I'm seriously NOT trying to dog the Select Comfort or anything, BUT....the SC is just an inflatable plastic bag the shape of a bed. Couldn't you just get away with a much cheaper air mattress available elsewhere (no name brand) and put THAT into your waterbed frame and get the same result? You know...just inflate it more for a solid feel, or deflate it for a softer feel...As opposed to spending all that $$$$ (...YES....up to 1-2 THOUSAND dollars and above!!!) to have the Name Brand : SC??????? ONE other thing to consider....we've(Page Bedding) never had a "Select Comfort" air-adjustable bed on display in our showroom, BUT we did have a "competitor's". Here's all I have to say...."if it's too soft, and you wanna inflate it....be prepared for what sounds like a vacuum cleaner being turned on!!!" (that's what the model that Page Bedding had sounded like...it got awful reviews/comments from our customers) Hope this helps! Later...

Look at the individual chambers in a SC . It's not as simple as you describe it.

Well, in January I spend 2 weeks in a hotel on a sleep number bed and I didn't sleep well and I still woke up with a sore back. I've had a bad lower back since I was 18 and injured it in the Navy, since then only a water bed work for me. But then again, everyone's different and some bad backs need that hard bed (my dad does) or some need the softer side. My wife is bugging me for a new bed but I hate to give up my water bed.

My SN bed is almost silent. The fabric cover, individual remote controlled sides, foam side pieces and center divider, baffled chambers and pillow top would be hard to replicate with an air mattress, although I have to say air mattresses are the bomb for camping.

I used to be a big fan of waterbeds. The SN bed is all that without the heater and sloshing. It takes a few nights to dial in your comfort zone and for the effects to fully show. I used to have moderate back pain from sleeping on a spring mattress (the wife made me give up the water bed) but now we're both happy- she at a much firmer setting than me.

/end sales pitch

I had a waterbed before the SN bed too. It was awesome for one person and miserable with two. The best part about it though was being able to regulate the temperature (I get hot when I sleep - the room has to be cold).

Like Ben says, it takes a few nights to dial one in right. I kept thinking I needed it firm, but when my back would start screaming in the middle of the night, I finally let most of the air out of the thing and sleep on it at like 30. Works very well for me.

If you get one, definitely opt for the upgraded model with the pillow top. You'll spend some money on this, but they have a 20 year warranty and you won't be wearing it out anytime soon.

I went through this a couple years ago and ended up deciding to save the money.

Half of the reviews I found for Select Comfort said they were absolutely awesome - and half of them said they were crap. If $3000 is what it takes to have no back pain - then I'll pay it... but I just wasn't convinced that it was worth it given the mixed reviews.

I ended up buying a Simmons Beautyrest for like $400 (hardest one you've got) and it is a big improvement over my old too-soft Spring Air (I just bought the mattress and put it on my old SA box spring).

The big problem is that ANY bed that's not made of concrete is going to sag more in the middle where you're heaviest - and for a stomach-sleeper like me that means bending my back into a bit of a U shape. I found a lot of relief from sleeping with a pillow under my stomach. Combined with my new firmer bed, this didn't solve my back pain problems - but it helped a ton.

Oh, and for when I have a really bad day I have a stash of muscle relaxers.... they're a godsend.

Good luck!
