Got a friend with a '67 Caddy Hearse that's just barely missing emissions. What alcohol do you use and where can you get a couple gallons of it for the gas tank?

Fuel drier is very pure alcohol of the type that you require, available at any parts store. Gallons are not necessary, rather make sure you only have a few gallons of fuel in the tank before adding the alcohol. I added 2 (pint?) containers to what I figured was 5 gallons of gas, and it made the difference. IIRC too much alcohol is not good.

I also ran the emissions passer stuff, but that's something completely different. You add that to a tank and run the whole tank out, you don't add it and then take it through emmisions.

Emissions on a 67? It's not exempt?

I heard that 91% isopropyl was ok to use- just a pint in a tank of gas. Pure stuff prolly better, tho.

I need to use alcohol on my 510 to get it to pass. I just go to Walgreens and get 91%. I wait until about 1/2 tank, about 5 gallons, then put 2 bottles in. Make sure it is the higher percentage. One time I accidentally put 70% in and the engine died. Had to drain the tank(DOH!!!). Another trick I do is to adjust the valve clearances to 0.01 above specification. He probably has hydraulic lifters though. If he barely failed, the alcohol should do the trick.

Enjoy the ride,
Ben

The drugstore rubbing alcohol works great and is much cheaper than the fuel dryer stuff at the autoparts store.

Also, once you go have it tested, go fill the tank to the brim with high octane stuff to help negate the effects of the alcohol.

Use denatured alchohol....the honda passes everytime with a dead cat (but the car runs 100% properly. You can get denatured at home depot..put in about a pint per 5 gallons...

I have also heard the drug store stuff works good because it has distilled water in it which is also supposed to help reduce emissions...but I only have experience with denatured junk at home depot.

Crap, this one time (no not in band camp) I had a ring landing on #3 in my old Honda that was no longer attached to the piston. The oil control rings were no longer controling oil. The car was blue smoking out the back of the emissions test area and it still passed thanks to the denatured alchohol!
